I have a handheld (Samsung YP-T6X) that cannot play m4a files. I have been trying to get MC to automatically convert m4a files to mp3 before uploading to my handheld but I have not been successful. Instead, MC just uploads the m4a file as-is without converting it.

I have attempted to configure the handheld options via the associated dialog in Tools -> Options -> Handheld. I can't seem to upload a picture here, so, I'll have to quote the relevent settings manually (sorry):

Conversion -> Audio -> Mode: Convert Unsupported Formats
Conversion -> Audio -> Encoder: MP3
Files & Paths -> Supported Types: *

I think I have to change the "Supported Types" field to list the formats (mp3, wav etc) that are supported by my device. I have tried replacing "*" and entering wav and mp3, but, I get an error when I try and transfer the m4a file (sorry, MC just says "Error", it doesn't tell me what went wrong or I'd quote it here).

I have looked in the following help pages that the Help button in MC points to:

However, neither page talks about the "Supported Types" field.

Can anyone indicate how to set this field, or, what it is that I may be doing wrong?

I believe conversion won't work unless you install a DirectShow filter for the m4a filetype.  See our wiki for info (link above).

Thanks for the info, I'll install CCCP and see if that clear things up.

However, I'm still looking for information on how to use the "Supported Types" field as per my first post. Is it a list of file extensions supported by the handheld? If so, how do I enter multiple extensions? Semicolon, space, comma? Any examples?

I don't think CCCP is enough.  Try a search for DirectShow and m4a.

Supported types look like this:
mp3;jpg;mpg;aac;wma;ogg;rm

Installing CCCP and setting the m4a to use DirectShow did the trick.

Also, is it possible to add the bit about supported types to the wiki? Not sure where it should go but it seems like a useful tid bit of info.

I second that, the only info in the Handheld Advanced Options Wiki page is

To change those formats the device is assumed to support, specify such types by changing the setting at "Files & Paths -> Supported Types" which is set to "*" by default, meaning that all types are supported

It should at least give an example of the syntax like Jim gives in the post above. Please put that into the Wiki someone
