I grew up in a neighborhood where names like Gomes and Santos were common.  Does that count?

There were some GREAT block parties in that neighborhood.  Salted "Carne de Spit" (mispelled I'm sure) over a wood fire and placed in Portugese bread was the staple food.  The adults would partake of red wine and something called Portuges "bang-bang".

You from Newark? Cos that's where most Portuguese emigrants in the US are.

Yes, neighbourhood parties are very portuguese-like hehe. Wherever we go we tend to stick together and at the same time invite other people and make new friends. Hmm, carne de spit? I think you mean "espeto". That means its pieces are stuck on a stick (nice ring to it) and cooked there.

Now Bang-bang I really can't figure out Next Page Could you elaborate on that?

Always good to see other cultures enjoying ours Next Page

"espeto" that must be it.  Yes, I was told it translated as meat (steak) on a stick.

Bang-bang was some sort of distilled spirit.  Not sure if it was really Portuges.

Would you look at all these espitos?

Looks like I'm going to have to make my own espito skewer 'cause I can't find these for sale anywhere. :-)
