Restoring a library slow
« on: January 28, 2008, 01:03:10 am »

Hello,

A few weeks ago I upgraded to version 12.0.400 (or 401, 402) and since then my daily routine of restoring a library has become wayayay slower.
It's the function: File ---> Library ---> Restore Library. The 'slow factor' is in letting pop up the dialogue box in which you can select the drive/file. It used to pop up within one second and now (still in version 421) it takes up to 10 seconds! This delay is only just after I started MC - if I wait for some 30 seconds this delay isn't there. But... I always restored within seconds after starting MC and never had problems with that up 'till now.
Can that be resolved, please?

Thanks!

I thought build 422 would've fixed this, but I just installed it and the problem is the same.
Any comment on this issue, please?

Did anything else change?

Why are you restoring every day?

Media Center won't let you switch libraries for a short while after you first launch the program.

This is because there are background threads using the current library that can't be easily cancelled.

Thanks Jim and Matt for your reactions.

Jim: I have MC installed at my work and here at home. So every time I used MC either at home or at work I backup my library and therefor restore it at the other place (work or home in that order). This way I keep a clean library with changes made in for example the lyrics or in "number of plays".

Matt: I understand what you're saying, but up 'till version 400 or somewhere around there I never had this problem. Is it some new feature you guys built in?

Thanks for your replay.

Try Turning Off Auto Import

It May Help, And I Think They Added A Few Backgound Threads Recently To The List Of Changes.

Thanks for your suggestion, King, but if you mean Tools, Options, General, Importing & Tagging, Automatically import files when played: that is switched off.
And in Tools, Auto-import options everything is switched off too.

I know it's not a big deal to everyone, but for me it's quite annoying, especially since it always used to work 'dead on' (if that's the right word for it) and now it takes about 10 seconds before that dialogue box comes up.

I Just Did Some Testing

It may also depend on how many restore files are in that folder.

I tried myself. I always backup/restore to/from a USB-stick. I cleaned that stick all the way except for one library back-up. But to no avail: still the 10 seconds waiting.

What is it that's build in recently in MC that causes this delay?

I saw a problem recently that caused a hesitation.  MC had some bad links to cover art.  You can add the cover art location field to any view, then sort by cover art location.  The links looked like c:^5cmusic^5cartistname....  I did a remove cover art for these files and my hesitation went away.

Other than that, I don't know what could cause it.  Try turning off anything you can (podcasting, etc).  Remove third party plug-ins and visualizations, disable virus checking, etc.

Try creating a new library.

See the "Weird Problems" thread in my signature for more ideas.

Thanks for your support, Jim. Very kind.

I will do the things you say, although I again emphasize that I've been working like this for years now and I've never had a problem with it, up 'till this 4-0-something build.
The funny thing is that a minute after starting MC the restore dialogue box comes up promptly as it should. If nothing helps I have to live with that.

I'll keep you posted on my findings.
