protected cd
« on: August 06, 2002, 11:38:36 pm »

I have bought a cd from Lauryn hill and i didn't notice (i know i have to do it from now onwards, i hate this kind of things) that it has a warning saying that's not to be played on pc/mac. Well, i have bought it, so i have a problem, i want to listen it, and the only place i have to listen it is through my pc, but it doesn't work.

i heard there was a way to avoid this protection, can you shed some light?

thanks a lot,
Miguel.

I have tried that with the filter pen. No way.
I had to copy the CD with my HiFi track-by-track :-/

I will never buy any CD from Shakira again. Sorry sweetie.

Hi Folks,

Depends on what protection it is (Macrovision SafeAudio or sony K2Audio) but certain devices are able to read those @$#@%# CD's.
I got the same problem with the 'A New Day Has Come' by Céline Dion - didn't play on my NEC DV5800A DVD player, nor on my PX-40TS SCSI CR-r drive, but played on my PX-W2410A burner.

So you can have a look among your friends, maybe one of them belongs a "good" device.

(Other option here, but a little tricky !)

Anyway, Bonne Chance !

Yves.

The pen is good for only one kind of protecred cd

If you have a look at it it is what you see ,from center to end

A large part who looks like regular cd encoded.A small part who looks lilke a blank cd and again a small part who looks like an encoded part .You have to put the pen on this part. All this part .If you miss a millimeter it will not work. You need good eyes and not using full strong light

I do have a very simple and straight forward viewpoint: I already _pay_ (germany: GEMA. I'm sure there a similar systems in other countries) for copying my CDs to other medias (tapes, CDRs). So I don't see any need for copy protecting the CDs. If they do, they loose one customer.
If they go on this way, I guess they will loose even more customers to "free audio" communities.
