Online database lookup + flac-mp3 conv.
« on: February 27, 2008, 05:36:28 am »

Hi,

Just got MJ the other day after spending lots of time researching a new media player. I wanted to rip all my cd's in flac format and MJ seems to be spot on. An excellent programme crammed with more features than i had expected.

2 problems have reared so far though, and excuse me if this has been asked before!

1. Obviously an ipod cant play flac. I am led to believe through the help content that MJ automatically converts flac to a suitable format (user specified), but even after setting this up, it wont work due some sort of pluggin needed. Could someone point me in the right direction?

2. I started ripping without an internet connection and have a couple of thousand songs now with just artist/album info as entered by myself. I had disabled auto lookup to save me having to ignore it every time i ripped a new cd. What is confusing me, is i cant seem to find an option, or any info in the help, for using a lookup post rip. Post rip being not when its just away to eject. Can i update all of these files now or do i have to rip them again when connected?

Thanks for any adivce given.

Regards,
Dougie.

1. Ye I wish mp3 conversion was enabled by default, without the need for a license... I mean I also rip my CD's to FLAC for listening on larger sound systems without the clutter of CD's, but for my iPod I love the idea of on-the-fly mp3 conversion...

After some thought...
Have a play with the iPod > Options > Conversion > Audio > External Encoder - Encoder Settings

Maybe you can sync in an external encoder. Like http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Lame_Encoder.htm, I have used 3.97 with
--alt-preset 256 command line in other apps. Appears to work using.... the below settings , A slightly unusual setup but it appears to work, cmd box pops up and stuff.

CBR-Preset?
%IN %OUT --alt-preset-extreme (320kbps)
%IN %OUT --alt-preset-standard (192kbps)

VBR-Preset?
%IN %OUT --alt-preset <<BIT RATE>>

(Settings are just from my testings.)

2. As with most CD Info programs I believe this is only possible when you insert the CD to the drive and perform a rip. It probably grabs an ID code from the CD or something.

Glad to help :D

Thanks. Just looking for the pluggin that the error box displays when trying to file transfer from flac (HD) to mp3 (pod).

Hmm, with both media player and itunes it was possible to look up cd info at a later date, providing the source file had been improted (ripped) by the respective media player. I assumed this would be the case with MJ as it is far more extensive than either of these. The thought of having to spend hours typing in track info does not really appeal!!!

Right click on a track or tracks to do "Track Lookup".

You can also right click on a CD to do CD lookup, even after it's been ripped.

Get from internet (cover art)

Play/add to playing now

tag

rename/delete/edit

Send to/library tools/cover art/locate

doug2507 you are correct I cannot find 'Track Lookup' anywhere. Maybe it is in Media Center...

Try looking in the CD rip screen? I haven't got a CD nearby to test. I remember there being extensive options in the CD rip screen.

Thanks!. The CD look-up/submit is very useful.
Oh, I just bought my mp3 license ($9.00) for MJ - I just can't live without the lame 320 cbr! ;)
