Error in Digital Secure rip

Listening to: 'Switchback' from 'Free fall' by 'Jesse Cook' on Media Jukebox

I tried to rip this album since updating my ASPI layer to test if it had any affect on the ripping.  Here's the log:

H: Free fall - Jesse Cook
Track  1: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Switchback]
Track  2: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Air]
Track  3: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Virtue]
Track  4: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Free Fall]
Track  5: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Paloma]
Track  6: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Incantation]
Track  7: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [All That Remains]
Track  8: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [On Walks The Night]
Track  9: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Querido Amigo]
Track  10: Completed Ok - Quality 100.00% [Viva]
Track  11: Failed to read - Quality 0%  [Fall At Your Feet (& Mario Takes A Walk (Live))]
 00:53:08  Unreliable data after 16 re-read attempts
00:00:00  Hard errors. Unable to finish reading this track
 00:00:00  Rip cancelled

So I fired up EAC and it ripped the CD with no errors.

Things to note:
1)  MJ reported the wrong track times on this CD, like track1 = 53:12, EAC reported the correct times.

2)  Until it hit the error on the last track the ripping speed was vastly improved.  Had it finished ripping it would have been about 11 minutes compared to EAC's 7 minutes.

3)  MJ reported an ASPI error when it failed to rip the last track.

For one thing, wnaspi32.dll and aspi32.sys go hand in hand (they are both req'd). Go to the Adaptec site and download aspi471.exe. Extract the files, close all programs, and reinstall aspi. If it wants to reboot, then u know it is installed properly. That should take care of the problem.

Xenno -

Thanks for the reply but I have the impression that the Aspi32.sys file is for XP or NT machines.  Just to be sure I rebooted in Safe mode and reinstalled the 471 files.  No change in my system, aspichk still reports a good install.

just for the record (and to back you up a little bit..):

I have had a few instances where I experienced the same:

During a digital secure rip MJ reported hard errors and unable to continue ripping.

I tried to rip the same tracks with EAC - with no hassle, although it did a few times of error correcting, but the rips came out perfect.

Don't know the reason why for this - but it does happen once in a while.

I'm on XP also, and with ASPI 4.71, plextor cdrom drive and newest MJ version.

So it sounds like MJ is not handling the table of contents correctly for this CD. To test this, try ripping in "large buffer" mode and see if you get the same results (aspi error). If to, I'll try to get hold of this CD and run some tests. Have you seen other CD's that list the wrong track times in MJ?
You're correct about win98 not needing the aspi32.sys file.

JohnT -

I tried Secure Mode one more time and got the same error, here's the log:

Secure Rip Log created at 14:55:46  Tuesday, August 06, 2002

The quality percentage is the ratio of the minimum number of re-reads
to the actual number of re-reads of the CD data sectors.

H: Free fall - Jesse Cook
Track  11: Failed to read - Quality 0%  [Fall At Your Feet (& Mario Takes A Walk (Live))]
 00:53:08  Unreliable data after 16 re-read attempts
00:00:00  Hard errors. Unable to finish reading this track

Then I tried Large Buffer mode and it ripped with no problem.  Maybe this is a clue?

Contents of CD as viewed in Explorer.  Note - no cda files are shown.
MMDATA
AUTORUN.INF
COOKVIDS.EXE
README.TXT
QTSETUP.EXE
QTCACHE.QDA

And no, I've never noticed a problem with track lengths on other CDs.

Take care.
