Recommended MP3 Player
« on: March 06, 2008, 06:40:01 pm »

I recently got a good deal on a Sansa E250 on a good deal, and I'm very unsatisfied with it... I would get a Itouch, and don't mind Itunes, but I also need to sync my Garmin Zumo; and don't want to maintain two media libraries.

So does anyone have a MP3, that they would reccomend, to utilize JRiver MC.  I will want to sync playlists, and podcasts.  I prefer a flash based player, and removeable SD or Mircro SD memeory is a plus. (Garmin uses SD, and bought micro SD for Sansa)

I use a number of Ipods to provide music in various places all synced with MC 12.  I find that extremely reliable and fast and the Ipod provides satisfactory sound, extreme ease of use, and satisfactory reliability along with a large variety of connection capabilities.  Itunes is not needed except to update firmware.

New 3G iPod Nano works well with MC and is a very nice device. Display is great and video is actually usable.

I have the Sansa Clip and it Syncs great with MC12. I started out wanting one with SD chips but I like this clip so well combined with MC I have considered using it more than my HD based players. MC does a great job managing all of my Families players by simply creating playlists for each of them.

I have the following and have had no issues. I also thought I saw someone on the Portables forum that had the new Sansa View that I thought was having good luck.

h120 (w/Rockbox)
h320 (w/Rockbox)
iPod 5G (w/Rockbox)
iPod 5G w/Apple Firmware
Sansa Clip 2gig
2- Sansa m230s for the kids.

The following players are MC-capable.
  • Cowon D2 should be pretty good and is has got a SD slot. Cowon has great sound and a sometimes unpolished UI.
  • The new iRiver E100 should have the SD slot too, although I am not certain. iRiver has always delivered great players, and the E100 seems like a good, cheap player with loads of features, although dull looking.
  • The new Creative Zen has a SD slot too, but I have have read the supports should be rather blunt, since stuff on SD is not integrated into the main library. Otherwise it seems like a nice player.
Me, I have gotten the Sony A818 (and A808 too for the matter) to replace my now dead iPod. I haven't received them yet, but I will by the end of this month. Neither has got a SD slot, though. Sony players beyond A808 should work with MC, or any other decent media center.
Supposedly, you can get the Zune to work with MC by using zAlternator, but I do not know how great it works. You will be supporting a closed format by buying a Zune though. It uses a propitiatory transfer port (MTPZ). The iPod is too, but to a lesser degree. At the moment, iPhone and iTouch are closed platforms too.

Cheers,
Rasmus
