Hi there. This problem was dicussed briefly here :
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=41571.0. Unfortunately, that thread is covering a lot of ground. I'd like to discuss this specific issue in more detail here if possible.
Basically, the problem is this:- I watch live DVB-T broadcasts via MC (from Theater View). It's excellent. However, with timeshifting active, things go south in terms of MC responsiveness and general performance. The problem gets worse the longer you use it.
This is what I see while timeshifting is in progress:-
1. In Theater View, animations stutter (even at a reduced frame rate) and there are large delays between page transitions
2. MC is slow to respond to remote/keyboard keypresses
3. Slow channel changing (6-8 seconds compared to 1-2 seconds with TS off)4. Huge increase in time required to load other programs (like Internet Explorer etc).
As soon as timeshifting is stopped, things return to normal - no probs. Also, the problem is exacerbated when the TS buffer catches up to the live broadcast. Pausing a few seconds (to increase the gap) and then resuming playback seems to help the situation a little.
I'm guessing disk IO is huge with timeshifting active and could well be the culprit but my PC specs should be more than adequate to handle this feature... Intel Core 2 Duo E6320, SATA II (3gb/sec) local disk (TS buffer is written here), 2gb 800Mhz RAM, ATI 2400HD HDMI video card - all running WinXP SP2 with the latest updates and drivers. Virus checkers etc are non existent. CPU utilisation while watching HD content on this PC is < 20%.
I should point out also that I've done some comparitive tests with some other well known tv software and these don't seem to exhibit the slowness I'm observing with MC during timeshifting.
Now, I'm interested to know if others have these issues too. It's curious that more people aren't complaining but maybe the majority of users don't use MC for digital tv playback? Maybe ATSC users are fine and the problem is specific to MC's DVB-T implementation?
Thanks in advance for any help with this.
