MC 12.0.456 and iPOD 1.3 firmware - sync problem?
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:59:55 am »

I installed MC 12.0.456 on my new laptop and tried a sync to my iPOD containing the new (3/19/08) firmware 1.3.  MC wants to delete everything on the iPOD and then retransfer all 6385 songs.  iTunes 7.6.1 doesn't see any sync issues.

I observed this same issue with previous versions of MC with firmware 1.2.3.

I think that is due to a date issue we addressed recently and not due to the firmware changing.

I just installed MC 12.0.459 and observed the same issue.  MC wants to delete all files in the iPOD and then retransfer all files.

I did notice that MC 12.0.459 indicates that the iPOD has never been sync'd.  It was with iTunes but not with MC since I am on a new PC.

Oh, when I loaded the new iPOD 1.3 firmware the process didn't reload the files.

Are you running iTunes on a Mac or a PC? Have you tried resyncing everything with MC?

I am running on a PC with VISTA Home Premium and SP1.  Why resync?  iTunes doesn't need to resync!  That would mean a retransfer of 6385 songs that haven't changed!

Any other suggestions?

Because there was a bug fixed recently that corrected something we were writing to the database. The database is now correct but it needs to be re-written.

So does that mean that MC 12.045x is not compatibile with iTunes 7.6.1 and iPod firmware 1.3? I am using a clean install of MC 12 so it doesn't know of any previous iPod DB.  Shouldn't reading out the iPOD and comparing it to the PC library do the trick?

I could reload with iTunes but I get the feeling that MC doesn't like it and will want to reload it.  MC appears not to want to be second fiddle.

In MC, disable your sync rules, manually tranfer 10 songs that were tagged for re-syncing, then re-establish your sync rules. What is the status for the files you just manually tranferred?

Now go to iTunes and transfer a file, exit iTunes and go back into MC. What is the status for the files you manually tranferred in using MC?

Case #1.

Disabled sync list and restarted MC. All songs marked "on device". Dragged 9 songs to iPod. Restarted MC and re-enable sync list. Now "the" 9 songs are maked for deletion and are in the queue. I don't see a change from the before. All of the songs that were in the queue are still marked that way and all of the songs are still marked for deletion.

Case#2.  I transfered one song with iTunes (7.6.1.9 more infor for you).  I did notice that iTunes went through a process of "Determining gapless information for 2320 songs" of the 6385.  I don't know why this occurred.  Next I shut down iTunes and started MC.  The one song that I transfered is now list three different ways: on device, delete on sync and in the queue. All of the rest of the songs are marked both in the queue and delete on sync.

I think there's still a problem with Daylight Savings Time.

Rick,

I don't think daylight savings time is the issue.

However, I did a restore using iTunes and then a sync (6385 songs).  Everything looked good.  ;D

I closed off iTunes and ejected the iPod.  I started MC and did a library clear and then re-imported all music (6385 songs). I then connected the iPod and did a sync check.  All of the songs except 254 random songs show on the device. The 254 show "in queue" and "delete on sync".  I have not made any changes to the physical mp3 files.

I said I would retest after another release past MC 12.0.451 was released.  You now have the results. Like I said before, MC is not compatible with the iTunes 7.6.1.9 sync.  The testing was done using using two different levels of iPod firmware.

Good luck, you have your work cut for you.

Dave,

Can you look at one more thing for us? Disconnect your iPod and compare the date modified values for one of the files that continues to resync in MC and in iTunes. To see this date in iTunes, right click on the file and click Get Info. To see this date in MC, right click on the file and click Tag (if you don't see it right click in the Tag action window and select Show All Tags).

Are the dates off by an hour?

Also, are the ratings for the song the same in MC and iTunes?

Thanks,
Rick

OK.  I picked a song that I have never played that was marked "In Queue" and "Delete on Sync" by MC.  My iPOD was sync'd yesterday (3/19) with iTunes and the process finished some after 7:00 PM EDT (probably 7:23 PM)

MC tag info:
3/8/2008  9:18 PM
3/19/2008 7:23 PM
3/19/2008 1:48 PM

ITunes info:
3/19/2008 1:48 PM

Don't use ratings.  Oh, the 3/8/2008 date is probably when I copied my music library to my second HD on my new PC. And those 254 songs mentioned above, I mostly likey never played and didn't modify.  I pretty much take all the defaults except I use manual sync.

So, the sync problem happened on two different PCs running two different iPod firmware levels and with two different versions of MC 12.

I am seeing the same problem after upgrading to Media Center version 12.0.459.  I was previously running under Media Center version 12.0.451.  I had just initialized the iPod with MC 12.0.451 and done a full sync and ejected the iPod.  Then I installed MC 12.0.459 and connected the iPod.  Now Media Center wants to delete all the files and sync them again.

I haven't changed any tags in any of the files or played any of them.  So I'm not sure I understand why it wants to re-sync everything again.  My iPod is an iPod classic 160 GB model running the software version 1.1.1.  I really hope I don't have to re-sync my 17,006 files again.

I also seem to be having an issue with the new "use version stacks to save conversions" feature, but I'm not sure I should clutter up this post with that issue as well.  Should I start a new post about that?

Practice makes perfect!

I installed 12.0.462 and now it wants to delete and sync 302 songs of 6385.  The other 6383 it now shows on device.  It's looking better but more practice is still needed.

A note of interest on sync.  I shut down MC and then restarted MC and did another sync check.  This time it said 130 needed to be sync'd. So, I shut down MC and then restarted MC.  I then tried a sync check again.  This time it said 152 files needed to be resync'd.  It seems like everytime I do a sync check it comes up with a different number.  I haven't modified anything and haven't played anything.

Just for good measure I tried it a third time.  Sure enough, 145 songs need to be sync'd.  Is fourth time the charm?

We think the reason this is happening is that MC is calculating the replay gain and saving it to the file tags in the background. This bumps the Date Modified and flags the file as changed. We are changing it so that MC doesn't save the replay gain to the tags when processed this way. This should get rid of the re-syncing issue.

I have the same problem exactly.. MC ver. 12.0.462

I sync an Archos 605 .. no other software involved.

preformed a clean fresh sync (nothing on the Archos before the sync), 5 min after successful sync I added Video to the previous music sync.. and now MC want to delete and resync all my previously sync mp3 files.

I did a sync check with iTunes and everything is good.  No songs were transferred.

I installed MC 12.0.465 and cleared the library and did an import.  MC 12.0.465 indicates that 158 songs need to be sync'd.

So, iTunes says my iPOD is good to go but MC 12.0.465 still has problems.

More practice is still needed.

« Reply #28 on: March 28, 2008, 09:42:04 pm »

I did the following:

1. Cleared the iTunes library
2. Imported HD music folder to iTunes
3. Restored iPod
4. Sync’d iPod to iTunes library (6385 songs) – watched a movie on TV for 2 hours
5. Disconnected iPod
6. Started MC
7. Cleared library
8. Cleared log
9. Stopped and started MC
10. Imported HD music folder to MC library (6385 songs)
11.Connected iPod
12. Performed sync check --------- EVERYTHING IS GOOD!!!!

I did have to clear out some "ratings" on one album that MC, iTunes and VISTA had a different number of stars before I performed the above procedure.  I don't use ratings so I don't know how the differences came into existence.
