Another Sync error with iPod Touch
« on: March 27, 2008, 11:49:23 am »

I'm having a problem with syncing my iPod Touch.  After syncing the first time with about a 1000 files, I can't sync with Media Center again.  If I try to sync new files, MC will try to upload a file, hang for a minute, and then crash the iPod.   The only way I've been able to get MC to sync again is if I delete all the music off the player and remove any database files... essentially starting from scratch.  Anyone know why this is the case?  Anyone else having this problem?

How are you deleting the files? Did you Jailbreak your touch?

I did jailbreak my ipod, but i am deleting the music from within MC.  Even after every file has been deleted from the iPod, it won't sync with MC (it continues to hang and crash on the upload process).  So from there I need to SSH into the ipod and delete the itunes library database files before I can re-sync from MC again.

I'm also finding that if I upload a large amount of music to my iPod, the album art won't show up on the Now Playing screen.  It only seems to show up in the cover flow screen.  Weird.

We haven't done any work with jailbroken devices yet but we anticipate that it will not work well (as you have confirmed) because the filesystem structure is different on a jailbroken device.

We still have a lot of work to do to get the non-jailbroken device working so it may be a while before for we get around to looking into jailbroken device support.

Alright.  I guess that only makes sense.  I can't complain, you guys are doing a great job getting everything rolling!

I did some further digging into the album art situation.  I found all the artwork and ithumb files (about 450mb in size) in the Media Center's temp directory (under docs & settings).  I then looked under the filesystem within the iPod and found that the coverart files were never transferred to the iPod.  So using the SSH program, I transferred the ithumb artwork over to the appropriate directories and now my album art works perfectly!  The funny thing is, if I sync a few files to the iPod, the artwork works okay.  I have a feeling that with a large playlist transfer where the ithumb files become very large in size, Media Center never completes their transfer to the iPod.  I don't know if this is the case with unjailbroken ipods, but it's something to be aware of whenever you guys start working on it.

Anyway, thanks for your support!
