Sony A808 / NWZ-A816
« on: February 26, 2008, 07:18:39 am »

Hey,
I was wondering if MC support the A808. As far as I understand the A80* series is the ATRAC cusine of the popular A81* series. Feature wise it has got some very attractive stuff that the A818 lacks: most importantly OTG playlist, gap less playback and rating system. It is also quite a bit cheaper.
There are a couple of utilities for transferring music to later Sony players, but I do now know whether they work with MC or whether they work with A808 at all.
Thanks,
Rasmus

We haven't worked with an A80* but we do have an A816 that works well. Give it a try with Media Jukebox. It's a free (audio only) version of MC but the handheld support is the same. If it doesn't work well, we'll do what we can to improve on it.

I would probably just check it out in MC. I have been subscribing since v9 :)
I know some Japanese, independent have added support for the old Sony players.
A81x is MTP, but the A80x is the alternative SonicStage/ATRAC alternative. It does support MP3, WMA etc, though.
Thanks,
Rasmus

I just got a Sony NWZ-A816.  4GB for $109 at Best Buy.

It does audio (WMA, MP3, and unprotected AAC), video (MPEG4 and H264/AVC) and images (JPG).

I had to tell MC to convert images to 320x240 and video to PSP.  Otherwise it worked out of the box.

I have gotten the A818 and the A808. They are the same, but the A808 has a tad more features than the other. They are at a relative, so I have not had a chance to try them out yet. I will let you know how each of them work out. The later ATRAC players are supposedly more cooperative. . .
The other day play.com was selling A818 for GBP 75! It was crazy. I guess they are getting rid of the last stock.

Now I have received the Sony A808 and the A818. They are both great. I do prefer the firmware of the A808 to the A818 since it has excellent OTG playlist compared to the (lack of) OTG on the A818. However, the A818 works so extremely beautiful with MC!

A number of third party aps has managed to sync with newer Sony players as the A808. Is there any chance you guys would work on it too? Otherwise I can drag and drop into SonicStage.

However, I do miss one thing: How do I manually convert YouTube flv files to PSP files? When I use MC to sync the A818 it happens automatically, but when I cannot find any options to convert files manually for the A808.

Thanks in advance,
Rasmus

Thanks for the report on the 818.  For conversion, try searching for "ffmpeg".

Conversion on-the-fly works great, but there is no option for manual conversion. I need that for the A808, which MC does not support. Ffmpeg seems to be working as it should, just can't be invoked directly, it seems...
