As the title says. Had recently moved to a new system, a vista machine, but all other hardware are unchanged, and the machine uses the old ones IP number.
The only MC says is:
04/28/08 12:58:48 - JRiver Library Server Version 1.0.38 starting...
04/28/08 12:58:48 - Starting Auto Detect beacon
04/28/08 12:58:48 - Failed to start sharing

Any ideas? Btw, if I try tot start the server again, MC crashes :/

Sounds like the firewall is preventing access on that port. 

Or something else is running on that port.  Try moving to 81.

It's probably not MC "fault", but I'm posting the problem since you're all such experts!

What else? Used Zonealarm on the old computer, but am using Kaspersky instead. Haven't had any problem with my laptop though (more or less the same software installed).

Port 81 is working though, but I can't use it since my employers fw blocks all ports except the most standard ones

Check your firewall router's port forwarding settings - many will allow you to change the target port as well as specifying the destination address, so for example, you could forward incoming traffic on port 80 to port 81 on your MC PC.

Media Center shouldn't crash though. Could you create a log of the crash (under Help->Logging)?
Make sure at least "Sharing Plugins" and "General" are selected.

I need the exact sequence of steps to reproduce the crash. I tried stopping and restarting the server, and it looks like the place the log indicates it is crashing is never used...

I'm not sure I follow you. But here's what I do:
1. Start MC (Library server is ON, but fails to listen on the selected port for an unknown reason)
2. Navigate to LS in the tree. Following err msg appears:
05/01/08 11:24:43 - JRiver Library Server Version 1.0.38 starting...
05/01/08 11:24:43 - Starting Auto Detect beacon
05/01/08 11:24:43 - Failed to start sharing
3. Click on Start Server again. Error msg appear again, but the button now shows Stop Server.
4. Click on Stop Server again. Boom.

Just tried this on my laptop, same error and same trouble connecting on port 80. Using Kaspersky, could that be it?

I think I've fixed the crash, that'll be available in build 491 or higher.

The problem, though, is that something else is running on port 80. If you want to use port 80 for Library Server, you'll have to figure out what it is and turn it off or change it. (It's not Kapersky, probably).

Use the netstat -an command, look for listeners on port 80. If the listener is only there when MC is running, it is probably Remote Server.

I tried using netstat -ano command and found that process id 1800 (Media Center 12.exe) were using port 80... but what's remote server?

I'll try the new build and check if the crash is gone...

Options > Startup > Startup Actions > Run Remote Server on port: 80  (80 is the default)

The program Help has a good explanation of Remote Server.

I can confirm that 12.0.490 crashes when Remote Server is running on port 80 and Library Server is started when it is set to run on the same port.

Ah, the Remote Server it was! Two problems solved, fantastic!

Conclusion:
1. MC SHOULD really know and inform about these conflicts. Perhaps a little "The suggested port is already in use by x". You know, the old "left hand knows what the right hand does" thingy
2. Remote Server is a bit supercool! I've always been un-checking that one before, not knowing what it was. I'm not sure I have any use for it, but cool nevertheless. Is there a way of changing it's most minimalistic interface in some way? And is it true what the copyright says, no development since 2006? This could be something truly amazing...I think

I could special case that one, but in general you don't know what is listening on the port you want...
