New feature request: monitoring queued tagging operations
« on: April 28, 2008, 11:23:31 am »

Hello,

today I upgraded MC12 to the latest available version and I added some files to my library; I have the options to get
covert art enabled, so I guess that's why every once in a while I see into the status bar those "saving data changes completed" messages (I translated it from the equivalent in Italian) but I think that there should be a way to show exactly which changes MC is yet to do (it has an internal queue, I guess), because I am trying to sync the library with my iPod, but each time new files appear out of sync and I am not able to know how many of them are really left to finish. As I am writing this, I rechecked the synchronization and it now tells me that 7 files are still out of sync, while the last time I checked the synchronization it told me that the iPod was perfectly synchronized.
I think that it is very important to let the user know the real progress of the tagging work made by MC.

The statusbar should show all tagging progress.

I've noticed that this isn't particularly reliable with large numbers of files & additions to the process. I have my database set to store all possible information in the tags. Process-
1. Import a large number of files, about 1000 or so.
2. Change the tags on these, bulk genre or cover art within the file for example. So far, MC shows the tagging progress sucessfully in the statusbar.
3. Change the tags on another (Smaller) set of files, and progress for this replaces the original batch in the statusbar.
4. When the tagging for this batch completes, the statusbar remains blank- Shouldn't it be either merging the two progress reports or reverting to the original once the second finishes?

Cheers

I can't reproduce this.

I tagged 1000 files.  It started counting down.

I tagged 100 different files.

The count added 100 and kept working down.

Ah, figured out why- Its a slightly misleading bit of behaviour on the part of the statusbar when trying to do two things at once :)
Trouble is that the statusbar constantly changes if you leave MC tagging one set of files and then move on to working with a second set. This means that the tag change progress in the statusbar vanishes as you start on the next bit, and although it comes back, if you're doing multiple things at once, its easy to miss.
How about a compromise of sorts-
Add a set of small icons at the end of the statusbar in addition to the current indicators; These would be constantly visible, and the tooltip could be used to convey any appropriate information. A small glowing/ dimmed icon is also easier to notice at a glance IMHO :)

I've actually often thought it might be cool to have a simple "log" of what the statusbar has displayed... Just a simple double click on the status bar to pop up a window that lists one-by-one the contents of what has been displayed in the statusbar.  Every so often something comes up there and I miss it and I wonder what it said...

The "real" log is, of course, far too obtuse to read unless you're looking for something specific.

Hello,

The statusbar should show all tagging progress.

unfortunately, most of the time the status bar is completely empty, it only updates once in a while
when it writes that it has saved the changes.
I forgot to mention that I have also enabled sound analysis, that must be the reason of a so lenghty
processing after adding new files.
I think that the suggestion of a separate icon is a good one, at least it could show a percentage
of the total work left to do, if enabling a separate window showing the work queue is too cumbersome.
