ReplayGain Help
« on: May 12, 2008, 09:02:34 pm »

I have a few questions about replaygain in MJ/MC:
1. Can MJ read the replaygain tags from foobar? I have a large library of music (+500GB) all tagged with foobar and don't want to scan all again.
2. Where MJ stores the replaygain values? In the file or in its database?
3. Am I going to lost the foobar replaygain gain tags if I scan the files with MJ?
Thanks in advance and I'm apologyze for my english. I'm speak spanish

Tu habla ingles mucho mejor que yo puedo hablar espanol.   Welcome to the forum.

You can download the trial version of either, import a few files, and find the answer to all your questions.

MC stores replay gain values in both the library and the tag.  It may be in the same location as foobar.  I don't know.

Thanks JimH. I'm already have Media Jukebox and imported my music files. But MJ not recognize the tags from foobar. What I want to know is if there a way (plugin or something) to make MJ to read the foobar tags

MP3 works on all players.  Some new stores sell MP3 files.  Amazon, for example.

Historically J. RIver has used their own replay gain tagging style. MJ was the first player program with internal replay gain support.

The recent MJ12 builds can read the TXXX REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_GAIN and TXXX REPLAYGAIN_TRACK_PEAK values if they exists ID3v2 tags (i.e. in MP3 files). The analyzer will automatically skip these files and analyze only the files that don't have these tags.

Read and write support for these two "TXXX" ID3v2/MP3 tags was added only recently. The goal was to make these tags compatible with the Rockbox firmware and some player devices that support this tag style.

MJ12 will automatically and dynamically create the album specific replay gain values that are used internally (there is no need to write the album gain values to the tags).

You didn't say what file formats you use, but as far as I know you can safely run JRiver's analyzer and have the MJ12 and foobar tags in the files at the same time. At least FLAC, APE, MPC, OGG and WMA work without problems.

OP

I noticed MJ has the ability to copy tags from one field to another (I think... I'm still new at this too), so you could probably move your old replay gain tags over to the tag field used by MJ. What I'm curious about is.... what is the "target" volume level? 89 db's seems fairly standard.

It is not possible to copy tags if they don't appear in the library and in any case the replay gain tags are not user editable. The reference level value is 83 dB.

Please read the following threads for more information (MC and MJ use the same replay gain system):

Thanks Alex B for the explanation. But my problem is that my mp3 files are all already tagged with foobar replaygain and MJ 12 still analize them, it does not skip them.

What is your MJ12 version? (The new replay gain tagging system has existed only a few weeks.)

What is your selected MP3 tag format in foobar's options?

Do you run MJ's analyzer manually or have you set it to analyze the files during auto-import?

Can you post a link to a small sample file?

Right now I'm using media center 12.0.497 (because jukebox crash several times when scan files). In foobar i'm using the default options for tagging (ID3v2 + ID3v1). I run the analyzer manually and the option of skipping analyzed track is check.
Here is the link for a file:

I can play it in foobar with replaygain adjustments but in MJ/MC i have to rescan it again

Your specific tag combination seems to be problematic for JRiver programs. The tag headers contain remainders of MP3gain's APE tags but foobar has converted these to ID3v2.3 UTF-16.

Probably you have the so called compatibility mode checked in foobar's options (if you use a current foobar version). In my experience foobar's default ID3v2.4 mode works better with JRiver programs.

I cannot reproduce the problem with my files when I use foobar's default tagging options.

Maybe the JRiver developers would like to check your sample file.
