MKV files won't play from Explorer
« on: June 01, 2008, 05:54:43 pm »

Odd, but rather major bug on this end-
MC is refusing to launch any MKV files from a double-click within Explorer. Even more oddly, precisely nothing is showing up for the failed attempt in the log- Here I loaded MC, reset the log & attempted to launch the file H:\Escaflowne\1.mkv before opening the log again:

All these files work perfectly from within the MC library, or in WMP :)

Done that, multiple times :(
Only codecs installed are CCP & RealAlternative.
As far as I've ever seen though, video playback problems from codecs always show something in the log, but the log here has absolutely nothing video related in it  ?

The MKV files are video?  What kind?

MKV is a container format.  Maybe another application has the filetype.

This happens to me as well. MC will launch, go into display view, and then just stay with black screen. Task Manager reports that MC isn't responding. Sometimes if I wait long enough the video may start. Since my videos are kept on a server, I thought the delay was just due to server disks spinning up. However, much of the time, nothing happens even after waiting a long time.
I noticed this behaviour with other video file types before too, such as .ts files.

Absoutely standard H.264/ AC3 video for the most part. Having said that though, there's plenty of others; some RM, some Xvid/ MP3, & all are exhibiting the same symptons :(
The one I was testing with earlier isn't on the server, although a lot of them are.

MC is set as the default association for everything, so nothing's interfering on that part.
I also ought to have been a little more specific; This behaviour only happens when MC is loaded in the background. If the double-click launches MC from a 'cold' start, then the files play fine.

Fitbrit- If you're seeing the blackscreen issue with .rm files (Or .rm in a .mkv container; Some anime), try downgrading to Real Alternative 2.75; 2.80 is bugged to hell.

Bump :)
Still seeing this with .510
A few more details on what does & doesn't work-
1. Double-click from explorer with MC closed- MC launches & file plays.
2. Double-click from explorer with MC open- No effect that I can see. Hourglass twiddles for a few secs but that's it. Nothing in the log at all for this failed attempt.
3. Right-click from explorer & choose Play from shell extension- Works whether MC is open or closed.

Clutching at straws, but could Vista be affecting things somehow?!

Cheers

Is mkv associated with MC?

Is default action for double-click "Open" or "Play in Media Center? (on my XP machine the top item in the right-click menu is "Play in Media Center", so double clicking works, without regard to whether MC is running or not).

Yep, 100% definitely associated with MC.

Still seeing absolutely rot all in the logs for the failed attempts too :(
