drive letter complications
« on: May 30, 2008, 12:37:25 pm »

OK, here's a problem for someone with more computer skills than I (almost anyone out there I'd bet). I'd like to restore a library from my office computer to my workshop computer. The music files on the two are the same, but my library data (tags, playlists, etc) are only on the office computer. The problem is that my files reside on different drive letters on the two machines. On the source machine, files are on D drive, an internal hard drive.......on the destination machine the same files are on E drive, an external hard drive. I'd rather not try and rename the drives on either machine as there are other type files, backups, licenses and such on both drives and I'm afraid it would turn into a huge project getting it all sorted out. Is there a work-around for this situation?
Thanks, Randy

If you only want to sync the library over once (or once in a while) then it is easy.  Simply copy the library files over to the workshop computer, and get it all restored.  Open MC.  All the files will be "broken" since it'll be looking for D: instead of E:.  That's okay.

Select all the files (every single one) and go to: right-click --> Library Tools --> Find and Replace.  Hit the Select None button (to de-select any marked fields to search) and then scroll through the list of fields and check the box for ONLY Filename.  Then type d:\ in the Find What box and e:\ in the Replace box.

Click Ok and say yes to any "Are you sure" questions you get asked.  When it is done, you should be all set!

If you want to be able to do this all the time (over and over and always keep the two libraries "in sync" then your best bet is to rename the drives.
