FISA in direct response to Nixon use these powers to spy on political opponents.

What the GOP did was FUNDAMENTALLY wrong and ILLEGAL...well not anymore I guess. I take the way they went about it as proof they wren't just looking for intel on terror suspects, internatiational comms, etc.   i.e. Why so seceret. The bad guys use encryption VOIP on open networks...untraceable at best.

It really makes me sick to my stomach that they trashed America's system of checks and balances, habeus corpus, and well just about everyting else on the table....

More than double were for it  :o

Dems caved in as they did not want to risk looking soft on national security come election time.

Because privacy doesn't mean anything, right?

JimH:
Privacy disappeared a while back.  The spying has gone on a long time.

This vote was about protecting the phone companies from lawsuits.

I'd hate to have been in the phone companies' position when the program started up.  The government that runs the show demands that you comply.  If you do, you risk the lawsuits and embarassing publicity.  If you don't, who knows what the government will do to you.

It's a corrupt government.  I had an acquaintance who was elected to the U.S. Congress about ten years ago say, "It's all about money".  He meant that getting elected takes huge amounts of it, that elected officials are always thinking about where the money will come from for their next election, and that there are plenty of deep-pocketed companies and groups always circling the spectacle like hungry wolves.
