ipod touch reboot - update (still broken)
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:38:06 am »

Matt....

Still get the touch rebooting during a sync, but it's happening much less often and I think I may be getting close to nailing down the cause.
Did some more testing the past couple of days.
I disabled stack conversion just to eliminate a variable.
I unchecked all but one playlist to sync.
This is a simple playlist in that it's static with no mix or limit on it.  It returns the same files every time.
In order to cut down on testing time, I added a rule on the duration field that allows me to increase the duration each time I sync, which then grabs another ~200 files to sync each time.

So, over the past two days I've not had a touch reboot during sync.
I've done this sequence of steps eight times without issue:

1) Start MC and wait at least 60 seconds.
2) Edit smartlist that is selected to sync in a way that increases it's contents by ~200 files.
2) Attach ipod to usb cable and wait at least 60 seconds.
3) Click on ipod in the tree to see transfer details.
4) Click button to start sync.
5) Watch the status field making sure none say 'error'.
6) When sync completes, click the close button.
7) Disconnect ipod touch from usb cable.
8) Reboot touch by holding in both buttons.
9) Close MC.
.....repeat 8 times.   All is well.

One additional change to test:
Feeling confident that the files are transferring just fine in a repeatable fashion, I decided it's time to get the other smartlists on the ipod.  These smartlists are very simple, they contain the master smartlist and then just sort differently.

10) Checked this one additional smartlist which says:  playlistid==614030978 [Rating]=0 ~sort=[Name]
Repeated steps 1-9 again.  This results in the changes on the touch of one additional playlist with a different sort and ~200 more files to add.
This sync'd properly.  So far still so good.

11) Checked another additional smartlist which says:  playlistid==614030978 [Rating]=<1 ~sort=Random
Repeated steps 1-9 again.  This results in the changes on the touch of one additional playlist with random sort and ~200 more files to add.
Touch rebooted shortly into the sync process.   ?

Conclusion:  Unfortunately I ran out of testing time at this point, so couldn't try again for repeatability.  Will do some more after work today.
But it would seem that the crash may be caused by a nested playlist with a random sort.
Matt, can you test this scenario?

This is with MC 13.0.6

Next day testing.....

Rated a bunch of songs in MC today.
Imported 1 new album of 12 tracks.

Performed the following steps again to sync the device:
1) Start MC and wait at least 60 seconds.
2) Attach ipod to usb cable and wait at least 60 seconds.
3) Click on ipod in the tree to see transfer details.  It wants to delete 92 files due to the rating changes and add 12 files due to new album imported.
4) Click button to start sync.
5) Watch the status field making sure none say 'error'.
6) When sync completes, click the close button.
7) Disconnect ipod touch from usb cable.
This sync completed perfectly.

Next round:
Performed the following steps to sync the device:
1) Start MC and wait at least 60 seconds.
2) Attach ipod to usb cable and wait at least 60 seconds.
3) Click on ipod in the tree to see transfer details.  There are no changes needed, device is fully synchronized.
4) Go handheld's sync list.  Check box for another playlist.  Again, this one doesn't change content, simply references content already on the device but with a random sort.
5) Now action windows says it wants to sync instead of being fully sync'd already.  Good.
6) Click button to start sync.
7) Watch the status field making sure none say 'error'.
8) When sync completes, click the close button.
9) Disconnect ipod touch from usb cable.
This sync completed perfectly.

Next round:
Performed the following steps again to sync the device:
1) Start MC and wait at least 60 seconds.
2) Attach ipod to usb cable and wait at least 60 seconds.
3) Edited the main smartlist to include more files on the device.
4) Click on ipod in the tree to see transfer details.  Wants to sync 184 files.  12.0GB available.
5) Click button to start sync.
6) Watch the status field making sure none say 'error'.
7) When sync completes, click the close button.
8) Disconnect ipod touch from usb cable.
This sync completed perfectly.

Next test:
Added one more smartlist to the sync list.
This list contains ~34 files, some of them may possibly be included in the other smartlist and therefore already been on the device from the earlier sync.
Very very early in the sync process, started getting errors and the ipod rebooted.  :-[ :'(
Log with more turned on than just handheld logging here

Same thing happens with me... iPod touch crashes and restarts during a sync.  I have yet to successfully complete a full sync of my library onto my Touch with MC.  I've been reverting to iTunes for a complete sync.  I hope this gets solved soon!
