Perpendicular recording drives have been around since at least 2001.

I figured out why maxtor when out of busness.

another one burnt up this past weekend, I thought it was the fan making noise but it turned out to be one of the Two 750 Gig Drives.

I Bought A 2TB Lacie Sunday To Replace It (I will Have Three 2TB Lacie Drives When It Comes In).

They Are Very Nice.

I took The Maxtor 1.5 TB Drive And Opened It It Has Two 750 Gig Seagate Drives In It, Both Of Them Were Refurbished Drives.

The One That Is Clicking  Is Bad.

It's not quite that bad.  The first commercial hard drives with perpendicular recording came in 2005 and 2006.  There were probably earlier drives in concept stages and research stages.

There's a catchy song and Flash video from Hitachi when they introduced their perpendicular drive technology: Get Perpendicular

Seagate bought Maxtor some time ago.   Maxtor was absorbed into Seagate.
