Creative Zen freezes when I sync handheld
« on: August 16, 2008, 08:43:40 pm »

System specs
Creative Zen 32GB (up-to-date firmware 1.21.01)
MC12.529
Windows XP Home Edition

I have been trying to "Sync Handheld" in MC12 while Zen was docked.  While MC12 is "working" to find files to sync, the Zen's screen goes blank.  The Zen is *not* off and is still technically connected to my computer and to MC12.  Once the Zen's screen goes blank, sync details finally pop up in MC12 sync list.  If I go ahead and sync anyway even though the held is not responding or seemingly no longer docked, MC12 usually crashes.

Additionally, when I try to click on the handheld under "Drives & Devices" just to see what is on the handheld, the behavior is very similar to what I mention above.

This has happened to me every single time I've tried to sync my handheld to MC12.  The only way around this has been to manually add the songs I know are new to my library and drag them into the handheld folder.  Clearly not the optimal way to keep my handheld sync'd with MC12.

Is this a known bug specifically to Zen's?  Does it have anything to do with the fact that Zen's can be used as portable hard-drives?  Please help!

I am running the portable version of MC12 on my Western Digital Passport (320GB).  I like being able to run MC12 anywhere I go and my entire library is in one place.

In my previous post (above), I stated my Zen was freezing up when trying to sync to MC12, but had not mentioned that I was running MC12 off of a portable drive.

Today, I tried something different... I imported my library into the MC12 that is on my laptop hard drive, and voila... the sync is working now.

So *now* my questions are:
  • Is the Zen freezing due to the fact that I'm trying to sync to a library that is not on my laptop hard drive?
  • Does my portable drive installation of MC12 lack something or some kind of setting that is causing the sync failure and the handheld to freeze?

More questions:
  • When trying to sync handheld to library, MC12 loaded several duplicate files onto my handheld.  I realized I had not checked the box "Delete from handheld any files not in sync list".  I went back and checked the box, and re-checked the sync and all of the duplicate songs had a status of "Delete On Sync".  Upon starting a new sync, it indeed deleted all the songs with status "Delete On Sync" but then proceeded to re-sync (convert & upload) songs I know were already on the handheld.  Any idea why is this happening?
  • I prefer to run MC12 on my portable drive.  I don't want to have to manage my playlists in two different places, which is what seems to happen when I run different versions of MC12, say... on my home PC and my work PC.  The playlists I created on my work PC (with all songs located on my portable drive), don't show up on my home PC (with the portable drive connected).  Is there anyway to only manage one set of playlists without having to use my portable version of MC12?

Please help!!!!  I'm starting to wonder whether MC can continue to be my main music manager for the Zen! :(

I'm getting the exact same behavior with my Zen 4GB.  It took me a while to narrow the behavior to the "Delete from handheld any files not in sync list" setting.  Did you ever figure out a solution other than leaving this setting unchecked?  I was planning on getting a bigger Zen in the future because I really like them, but I sort of like MC, too.  I'm using MC 13.
