I just got a new machine with the dreaded OS.  I tried installing the latest version of JRiver and it tells me that "The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion" and the installation failed.  I am running the install from the local drive and I checked the file to see if it is ok on another machine - it is fine.  I tried running as administrator but no luck.  This may be my lack of knowledge about Vista but any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I've never heard of that.  Is it a machine at work?  Was it modified?

Solved it - Brand new Lenovo laptop with clean installation of Windows Business Premium Edition.  I was not connected to the Internet when I tried to install earlier.  When connected it worked fine.  I think Microsoft is checking online when you run an installation and it fails if you are not connected.  I am not sure I like that!
