Automatic "lastname, firstname" or "bandname, The" ?
« on: July 26, 2002, 08:51:05 am »

I'm ripping my CD collection (850-900 CDs) and am frustrated by having to manually correct the naming info imported into MJ from CDDB.  I want to use "lastname, firstname" and "bandname, The" for folders and files.

Sure I can do it manually before the rip/encode (through Properties), but is there any way to tell MJ to use the CDDB info differently (since CDDB does differentiate firstname and lastname fields and "The" designators)?

I agree.  I'm a new user.  I've begun ripping a number of my CDs to see how I am going to manage my collection via MJ (I have over 1000). I'm getting a long list of artist names beginning the "the" and "bob", "john", etc.  Not very useful for find stuff.

maybe I will write a plug-in to do this.

So What Are The Possable Artist Names

Easy:
The Beatles (Options, Move To End, Remove)
Beatles, The (Options Move To Front, Remove)

If One Space Swap
Gees Bee = Bee Gees

Comma And One Space Swap
Gees, Bee = Bee Gees

One Space, Comma & The, Swap Names Leave The At End
Bee Gees, The = Gees Bee, The

Two Spaces With "The" At Front, Swap Names Move The "The" To End
The Bee Gees = Gees Bee, The

Any Others?

An easy way to do this -- tho it's not a fix -- is to use the album artist field.
That way the artist field is The Beatles; it dislplays in Album Artist as Beatles.
Of course, you gotta go into each album to make the change, and some folks use Album Artist differently... but you don't have to mess with chaning file names, either.
