RiverMote - iPhone/iPod Touch Client for JRiver Media Center
« on: September 30, 2008, 02:31:16 pm »

RiverMote is a JRiver Media Center Client for the iPhone/iPod Touch and is a native iPhone application that allows you to control JRiver Media Center anywhere in your house. I had never heard of MC until about a month ago when someone turned me on to it. It is incredibly powerful and has the concept of zones that many other media players do not have. I know Apple has Remote for ITunes but the MC user community wanted something similar for controlling JRiver Media Center from their iPhones or iPod Touches. Controlling different zones of the house, playing, pausing, skipping, and selecting playlists all from the convenience of their devices. Thus I decided to create RiverMote to hopefully allow people to unlock the true power of JRiver Media Center. RiverMote consists of two pieces...a server piece which runs on your PC and the client piece which runs on your iPhone or iPod Touch. The server piece included here is called RiverMote.exe and is critical to using RiverMote on the iPhone.

The purpose of this program is simple: to allow control of your JRiver Media Center from your iPhone/iPod Touch with the touch of a finger.

Don't be a slave to your PC anymore, rock out from anywhere in your house!

NOTE:  You can change playlists, browse playlists, change songs but you can NOT browse your catalog and update playlists from the device.

Hi,

I have started using RiverMote with my new iPhone 3G.  Awesome job.

I would like to know if there is a way I can get RiverMote .exe to start MC, and keep it, minimized to the system tray.  I will be using it on an HTPC and there will be times when having it pop into the foreground will not be good.

Thanks for the great work.

Mithrandir ,  thanks for the compliments!  I will tell you what...if you do an AppStore review and send me the username and country in which you did the review.  I will add that feature to the server immediately!  (Yes, I am bribing you). :) :)

Hi Mellow,

Very generous of you.  5 star review done in app store by Mithrandyr from the USA.

Done!!  There is a new setting in the Settings dialog that is "Keep Minimized".  It will no longer pop MC to the front if checked and it starts the application minimized to the taskbar.

Thanks for the review!

Maybe you can cash the data on the iphone itself. Take a look for example at Squidgy for squeezecenter which cashes artist, album and tumbnails info locally on the iphone:

Caching the album/artist in the local SQL Lite database I thought about.  Although the problem with caching is that your data is instantly "stale".  So if you add a new album to MC and its not showing up in the iPhone I will get a million support requests for "hey my album is not in the iphone".    Caching on startup everytime is NOT feasible since I have 1600 artist and 6400 albums, and MC does not give any notification of when new albums or artists are added.  So it would have to be a manual user scan.  here is the notes from Squidgy you sent me.

"On first startup use the detect server button in the settings screen to automatically configure Squidgy to use your SqueezeCenter. Squidgy scans your server and builds a local database of album titles, artist names and album thumbnails to allow speedy browsing of your music library. This scan can take a couple of minutes depending on the size of your library."

What a lot of my users do is they edit the RiverMote setting for SmartlistCount and increase it from 100.  Then they create a playlist per album or per artists in MC.   So say you have 600 albums in MC.  Just change SmartlistCount   to 600 (although this will make the app start slower) and now you have all 600 of your albums available for browsing and playing.  I don't recommend this trick for 6400 albums as that will go mUCH MUCH slower.

Ok squeezecenter indeed can tell you if the database has changed. Maye if jrmc control interface is updated to support this also then this could be done in a similar way. Although because I listen a lot to classical I woulde love to see more tag cashed, like conductor, ensemble, performer etc. I can dream  :D

HA!  Yes there are always dreams.  I appreciate your feedback and support either way.  Hopefully you can say a kind word or two on the AppStore?  I tried to make Rivermote simple fast and tight, and so far most feedback has been pretty positive.

OK I have been informed that RiverMote 1.2 has been posted by Apple to the AppStore.  Hopefully all the weird quirks that appeared with OS2.2 have been solved.   You will definitely need to upgrade your iPhone or iPod Touch to OS 2.2 to use this new version.  Sorry about that but it was the only way I could compile to make sure it worked was to compile it for 2.2.  I guess this is apple's way of forcing people to keep their OS up to date!

i havent installed the app from the appstore or the piece that goes on my windows PC... but i was curious if my iPhone had to be on the same wifi network as the computer running MC? or could i theoretically control my media center at home from work?

You can absolutely connect to your home MC from work as long as you expose Port 6002 on your home router.  It can be on any WIFI network and actually even works over 3G/Edge connection now (albeit much slower).

However that would only control the music playing on your home PC....you wouldn't be able to hear it from work???

Hi, so if I am to understand correctly, you can use this Rivermote plug-in to control MC with an ipod. Does this mean that MC will stream the music through to the ipod and hence through speakers attached to the ipod, or will it only play through speakers attached to the host pc?

Thanks

Output comes from your speakers configured on the of.  The iPhone or touch becomes a remote display of what's playing and sends commands to control MC.

Ok, so the only way to get that functionality is to use iTunes with an apple Airport Express? :(

There are other streaming apps such as orb and Simplify Media.
I don't have any experience with those since none of them support flac files.

This looks very slick.  Is there support for RJMC's multi-zone capabilities?

Thanks.

Yes!  That was one of the major feature requests when we were building it.  See this screenshot for how you can change zones easily.

OS 2.2.1 is required.  You need to upgrade your iPhone OS using Itunes and all will be OK.

To fix bugs related to Apple's OS updates, Apple makes developers constantly upgrade to the new OS to make sure your software is certified on the latest OS.   So Rivermote is always upgraded and compiled with the latest iPhone OS.   Is there any reason you are still on OS 2.2 and not 2.2.1?

RM works with the iPhone 3G as that is the device I own and test on.

I'm afraid to upgrade 2.2.1 because I had a problem my iPhone when I upgrade 2.2.0 from v1.
I lost my setting and musics.
I won't upgrade to 2.2.1 until I have 3G-S with V3(available by 19/June - Will RM work with V3 ?).
Can I install a copy of 2.2.0 version of RM myself for the time being ?
please advice me.

I don't know if you can because I use the ActiveX object from the registry so I think that will be whatever is the LAST MC version you installed.  So if you installed 14 after 13, it registers 14 in the COM Registry.
