MP3 filename renaming
« on: July 26, 2002, 01:03:32 am »

If I would rename my MP3-filenames, would this destroy the information in the database for the things not stored in the ID-Tags? Changing the database per hand is no option (we are talking about 2000 files).
I would _only_ change the filename itself, not path or anything.

Thanks.

Mirko,

if you rename them within MJ using the "Find & Replace" or "Rename Files From Properties..." functions then all will be OK.  You can even move files this way.  That's how I move my files from my ripping disk to my library disk, I rename all "f:\" to "m:\".  And, I've moved over 15Gig of files at a time this way, across a network without a problem.  So, it's a pretty robust process.

Of course this will only work if your renaming involves string substitution or the new names can be derived from library information.

Good luck.

Vlad,

I would like to rename all MP3 filenames using ID3-tag-infos. E.g. "Artist - Title.mp3".

Is this possible with MJ directly or do I have some MP3 renamer (I already found some)?

Oh well. Maybe I should try myself.

Thanks.

You can do that in MJ.  You won't lose the file information.  As Vlad said, MJ has a tool "Rename Files From Properties..."  Select the songs; right click and select Properties; click on Tools.  You can use this to rename the files "Artist - Title.mp3".

Note that if you change the filenames outside MJ, you will need to delete the songs from your database and re-import the new files into MJ.  If you do this, check under Settings/Options/General/Importing & Tagging to make sure that MJ has been updating the tags stored in the mp3s.

Mirko,

that's exactly what the MJ "Rename Files From Properties..." function does and your naming scheme is the default option.  I assume you just haven't managed to find it yet.  Its on the Tools menu in the Media File Properties dialogue.  The options are pretty self-explanatory and there's a help button as well.

Suggestion:

Is it possible to sort the list on the left side in the "Media File Properties" window alphabetically? During the test of the above spoken things I'm quite annoyed of popping up windows with double filenames and I have to scroll down searching...

Mirko,

you can actually do that now.  Make your selection in the MJ track list(highlight it), then re-sort by name (click on the title "Name").  Now, when you go to File Properties, the tracks will be in alphabetical order.  In short, they appear in whatever order they were in, in the track list.

Just one thing to whatch out for, after you re-sort, you may have to scroll around the list to find a highlighted track to right-click on.  If you right-click on an un-highlighted track then it becomes the new selection.

Vlad

that might be easy if you only had a few files, for me it would take weeks.

King,

I may call you King?  Anyway, this electronic, text based communication is such a flawed medium...
