when is it safe to ditch 12, and go with 13?
« on: September 18, 2008, 01:49:18 pm »

i tried 13 with my 12, and love it..

when can we get rid of 12 completelly and do 13?

Also how do we imported multiple libraries into 13?

i'm afraid of doing something wrong.. especially since i have 2 libraries perfectly set up in 12.. so i want to make sure they are imported correctly into 13 before deleting\uninstalling 12 .. what is the proper steps for completelly getting rid of 12? just an uninstall?

and feature questions.. any news on? will they be available?

Abiltiy to lock split views! so i can eventually enjoy 3 views instead fo the default and don't have to worry about the views moving!

integration with xbox 360

abilty to use Karokee with jriver meaning make our karaokee playlist and hit play and have the abilty to see text. ( a karokee option)

Ability to incorporate moviecollectorz database or a way for jriver to implement movie collectors database into jriver or make something similiar?!

view pdf files in jriver

Burn dvd's \ rip dvd's and incorporate with anydvd or similiar program

backing up of settings so you can import settings to other computers or on same machine after a crash or reformat

mini view incorporated into vista sidebar OR desktop sidebar (instead of using the unstable capture panel)

I moved to 13 about 6 weeks ago and haven't found a need to look back :)

If you have a MC12 install, MC13 will prompt you if you want to import your default library from MC12.
To add additional libraries:

Firstly, backup your libraries from MC12
File > Library > Backup Library

Then, create new libraries in MC13
File > Library > Library Manager > Add (select/create a new directory for each library)
One by one, load the backups you created above into the appropriate libraries

Hope that helps :)
Some nice ideas there, would like to see some of them taken on board!

I installed 13 (imported the library from 12), checked it out for a week then uninstalled 12.  There are some things that a different or still under construction and if these are areas you use / need then keep 12 as you main prog for now.
Thanks

It really depends on your comfort level with using *beta* software.  It's just like deciding if you really need to latest version of any office productivity software or financial software.  If the current version does everything you want or need, then you probably don't need the newer software.

is it now possible to install MC13 and use both MC12 and MC13 as a restricted user ?

for some reason this was not allowed with earlier versions

ok im going to get rid of media center 12.

umm some questions
i went to users application data jriver, and media center 12 folder is 6.74GB  and the media center 13 folder is only 160 mb

I'm worried about deleting 12 and loosing my libraries or files etc...?

Any ideas why my media center 12 folder is 6.74GB?

I noticed its the thumbnail folder and in there there are 9 seperate folders with names like 423j4h2jk4327fdfh545 blah blah, and the sizes are 7 folders at 24mb and one folder at 3.08GB an d the other folder is 3.02 GB

How come 13 doesnt have large folders?

I'm very leary of uninstalling\deleting these until i KNOW it's ok too.

Thank You.

Double check your file location settings in MC13 options.

In your situation, I sometimes rename an old folder to see what will happen.

You could also look at file dates to see what is being used.

But unless you keep media in your program folder, I don't think it's in use.

When you said this:

I assume you mean MC12.

When will MC13 be out of beta? I know you won't be able to give a date, but what are we talking about here? 1 month? 3 months? Or, Google-style 2+ years ;)...?

ok checked 12 folder again (see pics) the bottom two folders are 3 gigs and the top folders are all 24MB (i opend one of the bottom folders for you to see the files).. this is strange... really worried about size issue here. looks like they are my library files? does 6 gigs make sense? or is that WAY TO BIG? maybe i did something wrong once with 12 and it made the folder way to big?  Be great if that's the case.. i could always use an extra 6 gigs back :)

the 13 folder one has one folder in it for thumbnails and its only 51.7 MB's that a considerable diffrence between the 2.

As far as settings, in 12 and 13 i cross referenced both players and all settings are 100 % identical.

also i meant get rid of 12 :) Would never get rid of J river. It's The Ultimate!!  ;D

Each folder in the Thumbnails directory corresponds to a thumbnail cache for one of your libraries.

The purpose of a thumbnail cache is to speed up the browsing experience when looking at artwork.

The cache is normally built automatically by MC as you browse, however you can force it to be built via auto-import settings and/or thumbnail options.

A large cache suggests that thumbnail creation has completed for that library.

A small cache suggests that thumbnail creation has not yet completed for that library.

As you can see, a cryptic name is used for thumbnail caches and hence it is not straight forward to determine which cache belongs to which library. The best method I have found is to open a library with MC and then inspect the modified dates in the caches to determine which library it belongs to.

You can safely delete all of the cache folders, if you wish, because MC will automatically recreate and rebuild it. However you may choose not to do this because rebuilding a cache can take a long time for large libraries.

[edit]

p.s. When you delete a library MC does not delete it's cache. Hence you may have some orphan caches hanging around from previous experiments with libraries.

Let it go when you're comfortable with working with the new features.

I let 12 go about 2 weeks ago...didn't see the need for both.  If you've customized all layouts the way you want, did a backup of your files...let it go.

I'd say when they allow purchase of MC13 licenses it is ready for prime time.

But based on what I'm reading here I may switch over sooner than planned.  I know I have plans to reformat all our computers in not too long and I usually associate such a project with getting the latest version.  I'm sure by then it will be ultra-close-to-out-of-beta.
