Would it be possible for another program through some protocol to receive now playing info from MC?

For example, the program Pidgin has a plug-in that sets your status message to whatever is playing on your media player. MC isn't supported so I was hoping there is some other way to do it.

There is a last.fm plugin for pidgin but that's sort of a workaround.
