Media Center 13 & 12 With 2008 Ipod Classic 120GB
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:28:42 pm »

I'm considering purchasing the Apple Ipod Classic 12oGB Version. Are there any compatability issues with this ipod version?

Thanks

This topic probably belongs on the Ipod board, but..

I bought a refurbished 160 gb classic from Apple just to avoid dealing with this issue.  It came with the "old" firmware and works just fine on MC13.  I have assumed that the new 120 may or may not come with new firmware and if it is new and incompatible, it may or may not be able to be rolled back to old firmware.  Let's see what other's have to say.

I'm interested in this as well.  I'd really like to hear about the actual specifics of any issues that might arise when using newer iPods and MC13.  As we more further away from the 80 and 160 iPod Classics, this will become a more and more important issue.

Thanks,

Larry

I have a 160 that I bought a couple of months ago and it seems to work fine.

My main concern is what i read on the apple website that stated that the Ipod Nono, Classic "120GB" and i believe the itouch required itunes to work, what's the truth there?

I believe that apple has pretty much always stated this for their iPods ever since itunes came out for windows.  They want to lock you into iTunes so that they can more easily sell you media from the iTunes store, so of course they're going to say this.  Whether it's entirely true or not, however, is never clear.  Apple continually comes out with new firmware which intentionally creates problems for third party apps.  In the case of the iPod, the third party companies have always been able to adapt their software to work with the new firmware, but MC has recently stated that this "may" not continue to be the case with new iPods.

I am still unclear if the newest iPods and iPod firmware (i.e. the 120GB and the new firmware for the 80 and 160) work with MC13 or not.  I have read reports stating problems with MC13, but I've also seen at least one report that the 120 works with MC12.  It seems odd that MC12 would work but not MC13, but given that there have only been a couple reports, it's difficult to deternime any "pattern" yet.  I'm hoping that more people will try the various combinations and report their findings.

Is this with MC12, MC13, or both?

Also, are you using the latest firmware?

In know that the 160s with the older firmware work with BOTH MC12 and MC13, but I'm not clear if the newest firmware causes problems with MC12, MC13, or both.

Thanks for any details on this,

Larry

Apple's latest Touch and iPhone do NOT work.  All iPods should work with latest builds of MC13.

No changes will be made to MC12.

The Touch probably needs iTunes.  The others do not.

For what its worth, I didn't realise there was a problem before buying a Classic 120Gb and it works fine with MC12.

Only small thing is you still need to use iTunes to load iTMS TV shows and movies.  This seems to work fine if you set iTunes not to sync, set MC12 not to delete find that aren't in playlists, and don't let MC12 sync any video - then iTunes does its thing and the iPod's security stuff is happy, and then MC12 can synch all the music as normal.

Does that process make sense?
