As I contemplate building a new system I knew 1.5TB drives were unreasonable to consider at this point.  Read the reviews and you'll find all these complaints.  It is amazing that each jump is almost always 50% or 100% more space...so jamming so much may be less reliable (obviously).  I don't think it's time to consider such large drives unless they are in a RAID setup...but unreliability will cause issues in any system, even a RAID setup, with frequent rebuilding and other troubles.

Ouch... I just ordered one last week.  Should arrive today.  It IS going in a RAID system, but it sounds like it will be a headache.   ::)

I should have known 1.5 TB for $140 (CDN) was too good to be true.  Seagate is a half-decent name, though.

Quote
Seagate is investigating an issue where a small number of Barracuda 7200.11 (1.5TB SATA) hard drives randomly pause or hang

I like how companies use the phrase where a small number of

1. More Than Likely It is not a small number
2. No matter what the small number is it is always large to you (One too many)

I read that same phrase and immediately wondered about it because there are a lot of bad reviews.  I think a lot of people are having the trouble based on the reviews on Newegg.

There's a new firmware version (SD1A) that should fix this.  I've seen some reports from people who have applied it and haven't had any more problems, though you never know if some problems remain, of course...

So far so good... I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary.  I might have it in a good application, though - it's part of my data pool on my WHS.  Mostly used for backups and such and is fully redundant.  (Or so M$ tells me)

I keep thinking of getting one of these.  The firmware mess and average performance is bad.  50% more space and less noise than a Caviar Black is good.

Life is full of tough decisions.
