Can't Convert AC3 files?

I have some AC3 files from some Audio DVD's.  When I try to sync/convert these to MP3 (for use on a portable device) MC13 just gives me an error.  When I try to manully convert them I get an error about not being a supported file type.  When I try to play them from MC13, MP Classic launches and they play there instead of inside MC13.  Has something changed with AC3 support between 12 and 13?

Had to change the file type settings for AC3 from 'automatic' playback to 'direct show with filter'.  Any reason 'Automatic' isn't playing AC3 with DS by default?
