Some months ago, I used version 12 to burn some mp3s to a "data disc". Then I upgraded to version 13 (although I don't think this has anything to do with my problem).

Today I copied (using WinEx) those mp3 files back to my hard drive. MC found them and lists them, and I moved them to an appropriate folder, but MC will not play them. Rather it gives me a "volume not found" message.

I verified that the files are not write-protected.

The Filename tag for these files says "Can't be renamed".

I can play the files one at a time using the File > Open Media File dialog.

I reimported the folders in which these file live without errors.

I have used MC many times to rip CDA files to the hard drive with no problem, so I think my problem was caused by using Windows Explorer to copy the files from the CD to the hard drive.

How should I proceed so that I can play/rename the files using MC 13?

It Sounds Like Your Trying To Copy CDA Files From A CD Rom To A Hard Drive For Some Reason.

If you copy files from a cd they will be write protected

When you moved them, did you do it in MC?  Or in Explorer?

In MC, hover over a track so you can see where MC thinks it is.

As KingSparta says, copying CDA files isn't what you should try.  If the disks are audio disks, use Rip.

I don't know what caused the original problem but what I did to fix it was to delete the affected files from the MC library and re-import them using Tools > Import Folder.

Somehow when the files were originally transferred to the HD, they showed up in the MC filename filed as

\foldername - artistname - trackname.mp3, without the usual disk letter in front,

but on the HD their names were simply artistname - trackname.mp3.

And another thing - none of the files thus transferred had their R attributes set.  ?

No, these are mp3 files on the cd.

Surprise - No again! And I am really surprised as well, because I always thought files copied from a cd rom would be write protected.  So I just now verified that by using Windows Explorer XP to copy mp3 files from another cd to the hard drive. When I checked, they did not have their R attributes set either.
