Another memory leak example
« on: July 22, 2002, 07:34:54 am »

When I reinstalled MJ (to solve a CDDB access problem) I had to reconfigure the options.  During the down load on the Monkey's Audio plug-in there was a memory leak which used up all available RAM (512Meg).  When I shut down MJ the memory was not released.  Task Manager showed a process called "Media Jukebox.e" still running but holding only 123Meg.  When I ended it, all extra memory was released.

[edited for clarity]

I have seen something similar; several times, I have manually closed MJ 8.0.33x (most recently, 8.0.333), then seen MediaJukebox.exe still running in Task Manager.  This has never caused me to run out of memory, but that may be only because I have 1.0-GB of physical RAM.

It has caused other strange behavior, though: The last time I saw MediaJukebox.exe still running in Task Manager even though I'd closed the application, I was unable to launch any new applications.  The moment I forcibly terminated MediaJukebox.exe in Task Manager, all of the applications I'd tried to launch previously suddenly took off.

I hope this doesn't cloud the issue, but the behavior Vlad described does sound akin to what I've seen myself.  Next time I notice that mysterious MediaJukebox.exe instance, I will note the memory use associated with it.

scodan,

nothing hung for me.  MJ just suddenly gobbled up all available memory.  I knew immediately because Win2K stepped in to warn me that it was increasing the swap file which may cause some disruptions.  The file is now sitting at 1.5Gig.

Please post your system info.  Some problems are OS related.

I thought this is what you were describing: You closed MJ, and it appeared to be totally unloaded.  Then, you fired up Task Manager, and saw the EXE still running.  If that is an accurate description of what you had happen, then it is the same thing I (perhaps stupidly) referred to as a "hanging task".

In any event, my info is:

Media Jukebox PLUS 8.0.333
Install Path: C:\Program Files\Media Jukebox\

CPU: AMD Athlon 1399 MHz MMX
Memory: Total - 1048 MB, Free - 702 MB

Shell32.dll: 6.00.2600.0000

Sorry, scodan.  I think I'm with you now.  I was interpreting "hanging" as "stalled", nonresponsive.
