About UPNP and Media Servers?
« on: December 24, 2008, 06:07:21 am »

When I start the "Library Server" and then go to "Search for library servers" there is nothing found?

UPNP fails to start with "Failed to start"? ... nothing more ...

Any hints? Does it work on yours?
thx in advance...

I use Library Server everyday and have seen no problems. I just tryied the UPnP by it self and with Library Server running and had no problems. I also have no problems with XBMC autodetecting MC13 either. I am on the R95.

Make sure you're running the same build of MC13 on both machines.

UPnP and Library Server must be on different ports.

On the server side, in the same place where you start Library Server, what does MC say?

If it is not reporting attempts to connect, then it is probably a network problem.  A firewall is a possibility.

Both Library Server and UPnP work fine in MC13.  No changes have been made.

I'am testing on the same computer.
UPnP does not start even if I select various different ports.
A firewall problem? I'am not going outside i.e. I'am running on the same machine - nevertheless Firewall is disabled.

For library server: Is it possible that MC does not search on the localhost?
For UPnP: It does not work on MC12 either ...

thx

You might try concentrating on one server or the other, but I know that the servers are working.  If they don't start, the possibilities are pretty limited:

1.  The user (ahem) isn't starting them.
2.  Another copy is already running.
3.  Firewall (Yes, I read your message).
4.  Some other "helpful" piece of software.  Vista UAC, for example.

Disabling a firewall has not always been enough in the past.

Take a hard look at everything running.

OK - then first I concentrate on the Library Server. It starts, but MC does not find any server running when trying "Search for Library Server". So ... is MC searching on the localhost? It would help to know how MC is searching for a Library Server though ... what ports is it searching for? - the same as the server is started? or can there be more servers on different ports?

As a test I tried to connect with telnet ... and it works ... as soon as I stop the server the telnet session is end. So for me its proof: its not my computer - by the way XP (not Vista) - or any Firewall or whatsorever.

thx

1.  On machine one, say IP address 199.242.131.157, start Media Server on port 80.

2.  On machine two, add an entry for it under Library/Library Manager.  Call it test, use 199.242.131.157 as the location.  Load it.

If that doesn't work, switch the port to 8080 and use 199.242.131.157:8080 as the location.

The wiki (link above) has more info.  Start with the topic called "Servers".

Thx - The way you described it works - I didnt try this way before.
On the other hand "Respond to auto-connect requests" is checked - so it should find the server running automagically - but of course not if MC broadcasts to all in the network but localhost (... only a guess).
I wanted to try the functionality locally before, even if its not useful ... seems that I tricked myself then ...

Any Idea about the UPnP? Message is still "Failed to start" - nothing more ...

thx

Did you check for port conflicts?  Try another port?  Is another instance running?

I tried several ports ... e.g. port 80 (of course disabled library server before and checked with telnet that there is nothing open), port 81, port 8080 ... alltimes the same error message.

Step by step, what are you doing?  Version?  How are all options set?

Version 13.0.93

Options are:
"Dont convert audio"
"Specify TCP port to use" 8080
"Receive" Automatic

In the left tree I select "Services and Plugins" -> "UPnP Server" -> "Start Server"
then:
12/29/08 23:39:27 - JRiver UPnP Server Version 1.0.50 starting...
12/29/08 23:39:27 - Failed to start...

Is there a check mark next to the Port to use?

I don't see a problem with your settings.  The only possibilities I can think of are that there is another instance of MC running, or that some other software is doing something "special" for you.

I believe MC will not find a library server on the same IP address as the client, so if you are doing the search on the same MC that is running the server, or even on a different MC running on the same machine, it won't find it.

I've no idea why the UPnP server is failing to start. It runs a few services, but I'm not sure what could fail. It does use multicasting, but I've never heard of that failing. Turn on logging for the sharing plugins and have a look.

Port 8080 is common for lots of apps.  You may have something else conflicting.
Change the port to a random number in the 50000's and try again.

The problem you have (unable to bind a socket) is probably not an MC problem.

Try a google search.  I found a few references to vsocket.  One had a problem with tightvnc.

Try the same thing on a different machine.

Think hard about what software you have running.  Look at task manager.

A normal TCP server socket is binding - as seen with Library Server - with no trouble.
Cause if the error comes from Multicast they behave different.

I've nowhere seen a setting where to specify the IP interface where the UPnP server should listen. For multicast this would be needed otherwise the binding fails. I had a similar issue when creating multicast listeners on computers with multiple interfaces.
setsockopt(channel.sock, IPPROTO_IP, IP_MULTICAST_IF, (const char *)&myaddr, sizeof(addr))

This line in the end helped out.
It would help where exactly the binding fails though ...

I killed all services in taskmgr ... still the same problem ...

thx

Double check your Windows firewall settings.  Try a different machine.  It works, and nothing has changed for several months.

There is more information on our wiki here:

By "think hard" I didn't thought that this would be for real:

There must be special windows services configured ... further its not enough to disable the firewall - the ports must be explicitly enabled (strange enough) ... and a few things more.

I added the very good link to the wiki ... though I still fail at step 7 ... maybe will try later ...

thx

tombert,
The failures generated by the test program you found may not be relevant to MC.  I get some failures with it, but UPnP still works.

UPnP is a lot of stuff, and MC only needs some of it.

General question. I'm thinking of getting a laptop, if so does library server allow me to control MC from the laptop - I'll see on screen the same thing that is on the main computer? Or does it just let me play music from the main computer on the laptop?

Remote Server could do it.  This Wiki link should help:
http://wiki.jrmediacenter.com/index.php/Servers

Better solutions are available:
NetRemote
Cinemaronline's MusicLobby
Messiahs' plug-in on the Third Party board here.

Will check those out, still not sure if the music would come from my stereo speakers, without the laptop connected to the stereo, but be controlled by the laptop. In a sense using the laptop as a remote control with a video screen.
