Install on an external drive error
« on: January 25, 2009, 06:35:06 pm »

Hi!

I'm trying to install MC13 on my usb stick.

Can I use my current MC13 license or do I need to buy a new license?

[When I try restoring my license, I get an error code 21]

Are you choosing Advanced > Portable Install during installation?

If so, it should copy the license from your PC to your USB stick.

I'm using the same computer I have normaly installed MC13

I choose to install to a portable device, choose a directory (f:\Media Center)
Installs fine.

When I try to run it, I get that window saying my 30 days have expired.
I choose restore from file (just downloaded the mjr).
I browse to where the mjr is (my desktop)
I get the error 21

I copy the mjr inside f:\media center, try again, I get the same error...

What I'm actually trying to do is this:

I have 4 pc's around the house.

One vista machine, one vista virtual machine on my mac pro, one xp virtual machine on my macbook, and another vista laptop.
All those machines have access to one networked big drive that has all my music in it.

So I was thinking, in order to keep my library identical to all those machines (playlists, etc) and to avoid having to import the new files to all of them,
maybe I could install MC on the networked drive, and run it from there on all the machines [not at the same time] so I can have one copy of the library.

Is this the way to go? And will I have to uninstall the normal MC installation I have on the 2 machines?

I have just gone this route and it works great . My only problem is one machine just refuses to see the server . I didn't have to re install anything , I just loaded MC on the server and told the other machines to find the library server. I think you must have all machines on the same release tho .

Is the build on your machine the same build as the portable install?

 Yes 13.0.112

And when I try to restore my license on the external drive and get the failure
my normal install also asks for restore on next launch, but that accepts the mjr file.

I think it's a license limitation of some sort...

You have to have a licensed copy of MC on your PC, and then use the portable install.  This will assure that the portable copy is licensed.

If you're having trouble with the portable copy, try the above again.

Also, portable installs only work on removable drives -- not fixed drives.

Is an external hard drive that has a lan port on it considered a removable or a fixed drive?
