AVI is a container.  If the file inside is Flash, it's possible that MC is using Quicktime to play it.  Another user solved a similar problem in the last week or two by using MC's native ability to play Flash.  You could look at the DirectShow settings to see how the flv filetype is played.

If you open the file up with the G-Spot Codec Info app, it will tell you all the details about the format of the AVI.  More details about what type of video is contained in the AVI is needed before anyone can help you with with the issue.  An AVI is just a generic container for many types of video, similar to a "folder".  So asking for help with "an AVI" is like saying "I can't use my file, it is inside a folder, can you help?"

Well, maybe.  Open the AVI in G-Spot, and tell us everything it says in the box in the upper-right corner (Codec, Name, and Status).  Down a little further, it will list the Pics/s and the Frames/s.  This is the framerate of the source video.  If this is very low (lower than 24-25) then that is your problem, the video is just jerky as recorded (perhaps off of a cheap webcam or something).  If not, then it is something on the playback end.

Next, open the same AVI file in MC and start it playing back.  Right click in the Playing Video window, and choose DirectShow Filters --> Copy graph info to clipboard.

Then come here and paste the results.  If you don't get a response right away, don't fret too much.  We all have day jobs (including the people at JRiver) so we'll get to it when we can!

All that looks okay.  It is rendering using FFDSHOW (which is good).  The first thing I would try to do is reinstall CCCP and reset all the application settings.  This is pretty painless.  Follow the "first" 1-5 steps in these instructions: http://www.cccp-project.net/wiki/index.php?title=Troubleshooting_Guide#Step-by-step_troubleshooting_guide

EDIT: Actually, before you go to all that trouble...

Try to play the file in VLC Player, just to see if the file itself is broken.  Incomplete or corrupted downloads (assuming that file came from somewhere-that-will-remain-unnamed online) can cause weird issues like that.  VLC certainly has it's issues but it is a fairly stable non-DirectShow player, and it handles generic XviD files just fine.  If the same thing occurs using a non-DirectShow player like VLC player, then you just have a bad file.

Anyhow, assuming the file itself wasn't just bad...

Make sure not to skip downloading CCCP Insurgent and checking for other codec packs.  In Step 2 of the instructions, when you go through the Add/Remove Programs Control Panel be sure to go carefully.  Remove ALL Playback filters and codec packs you find.  Especially:

- DirectVobSub
- Anything related to matroska
- CoreVorbis or CoreAAC
- AC3Filter
- K-Lite
- FFDSHOW
- XviD
- DivX

Officially, you can keep XviD or DivX, but you probably don't need these (they're only used if you are CREATING movie files, if you are only playing them you don't need them).  Plus, it'd be best to get the latest versions anyway if you want them.  So just remove anything that's there.

Also, go ahead and remove CCCP.

Then, follow the rest of those 1-5 instructions.  Make sure to check the Reset All Settings box during the install.

Once you get CCCP reinstalled, try the file again and come back here and tell us what you find.

Also, I noticed that the file was playing back from E:\.  Is this a CD/DVD Rom drive?  If so, a damaged or dirty disc could be causing the issue, or a slow optical drive or a bad/faulty burn.  Even if it isn't an optical drive, there can be streaming problems with some external drives or with network issues for a network drive.

Try copying the file over to your C drive for testing.  If the problem goes away then you know it is the media it is stored on, rather than the file or DirectShow filters themselves.

No Luck.

I removed the codec pack and reinstalled.

It is still the same I did notice that on my other computer although the screen is small it plays fine this computer also only has the cccp codecs.

The E drive is just a drive letter and it is the hard drive.

I have also re done the offending movie and it is still the same.

I was today going to recode upping the frame rate to see what happens.

I was wondering if I need to use the Reclock facility. Not that I know much about it but its odd that I am having a problem with this particular movie.

I have redone the movie at 23.976 frames and it seems better although I have plenty of files that are 25 frames and play fine.

Try changing display setting in MC:

While the problem file is being played, right-click the video screen and choose "Change Display Settings".  Select one that has refresh frequency (the last number in the string) that is a multiple of 25 - for example 50 or 75.  Try keeping other parameters the same as your current system display settings.  For example if your current system settings are 1280x1024 32 color, choose 1280x1024x32x75, or 1280x1024x32x50.

Yaobing's suggestion is a good one.  I think what you're seeing is an effect known as "jitter", which is when the display framerate doesn't match (or is not a multiple of) the video framerate, causing some frames to be dropped.

BTW, though... Any movie sourced on film that you are ripping from a DVD, should be ripped to 23.976 fps.  You want to match the existing frame rate, not change it (changing it from 23.976 to 25 will introduce stuttering and errors).  Film is always 23.976 fps.  DVDs that are sourced from video, such as some TV shows (though typically not many dramas which are often shot on film), can be either 25fps or 29.97fps (depending on the country of origin of the DVD).

I don't know what ripping application you are using, but most should have a framerate setting "Same as source" (DVD Fab and Handbrake certainly do). Unless there is some specific reason you are changing the framerate, this would always be the best choice.

Hello and thank you for the tips.

I am using Dvdfab and it wants to rip at 25 frames the movie is Terminator 3 and is a Pal DVD. I have also ripped at 23.976 I thought it was better but on closer examination it isn't much better.

One thing before I try changing the display settings(as I have tried this once) I also watch the same movies on another screen and when you change the display settings it messes up for the other screen.

Does this mean that every time that movie is watched on a different screen it has to be changed.

I read somewhere that this change saves in the library, my library is shared.

The settings are saved in the library on per-video basis.  The change only applies to the video you made the change with.
