I think they already have since 331 & later use oggenc.exe which is a external encoder.

JRiver - is this true?

That is true.  Our Ogg Vorbis encoder uses oggenc.exe v 1.0

Excuse me for not knowing this since I have not had time to work with OGG yet, but just what is the main advantages of OGG over another lossy format like MP3? People seem to be pretty excited about the new OGG release, and I haven't really been able to grasp what the excitement is all about. Talk to me poeple!

Mike,
Some folks think it's better quality.  It's open source.

Try www.hydrogenaudio.com.  They love to talk about ogg vorbis.

We're busy here with Scronch's art class.

It's all in the name.  Remember the character? :-))

Good lossy compression format. May be better than MP3 in some ways.  Nice to have choices...

OGG is great sounding and all. But how many portable players support this now? Is there ever going to be support for other formats like ape with these type of units as well?

I think that OGG is the only other format besides MP3 and WMA with portable players (I haven't seen any OGG players but there's a rumor)so they are the only ones with a tiny little toe in the door. Whether that goes anywhere remains to be seen. MP3, even with all it's limitations is the stanfdard now. Blame (or thank) Napster for that legacy. Of course they had tremendous help from the RIAA in getting the message of their existence out.

i could be wrong, but based on news at the vorbis homepage it seems a few things have been updated since the non-official 1.0 release, such as the -1 quality setting.

BigMike

Many raisons why people exited here

In my opinion  there is one that is a fact:ORG sounds better than mp3

Beside this a new format out, open source is king of thing enought to make many of the forum heads very exited.

sure there is only one player playing ORG at this time, but the final product is just out

There is a lot of implications with ORG
let say you have a band and your band and other bands of your town would like to have a site with load of songs to download.
If you use ORG ,you do not have to pay as for mp3.

Let say you want to open a kind of mp3.com or Emusic,if you use the ORG format and not mp3,you will save a lot of money.

It means that a software like Media Jukebox can give you in the free version a good format to rip

Because the ORG format is exellent,i do see a big future for it.

Unlike Microsoft and wma[who is free as well i thing],who do not care or do not understand all the stuff about tags and other things,ORG will have soon more features than mp3.
Not to say that mp3 will be out,far from it.
As Charlemagne8 says, thanks to Napster for a large part.
But ,it is not a big deal to put only ORG to share if you use a p2p software, and this can help a lot
I will do it when back from my stay in Vienna

I agree with what you're saying, but remember it's OGG, not ORG.

Not quite correct. I assume you mean MJ when you talk about "only one player", but the latest versions of Winamp and Coolplayer also support OGG "out of the box" (well, there is no box, but you know what I mean), without any additional tools or plugins required.

That's correct, and that's a major advantage of OGG. Not only is the software open source, but the format itself is completely open and royalty- and patent-free, unlike MP3.

Check out the FAQ.

Some more things I wanted to mention about OGG:

There is no hardware support yet (except for the Phatbox), but I think (hope) that it will arrive soon. That's also why I signed this petition.

A few words about the quality: IMHO, Vorbis at "normal" bitrates (q5, equivalent to about 140-150 kbps) sounds about as good as MP3 at --alt-preset standard, which generates MP3s with bitrates over 200kbps. And OGG at -q0, with bitrates mostly lower than 64kbps sounds very impressive if you take the enormous compression ratio into account.

OGG also solves some of the inherent shortcomings of the MP3 format. For example, it is less problematic with very fast attack/impulses in music, like the infamous fatboy sample (the beginning of "Kalifornia" by Fatboy Slim). Also, gapless playback is perfect with OGG, unlike MP3. See also my post in this thread.

OGG ,sorry

By player i mean hardware. But they will come out soon.If not in US ,in Europe.

I found more and more indee-legal- music on OGG since few months

I would like to heard from people knowing more than me about OGG versus MPEG

Listening to: 'Falling Behind' from 'Rise Again' by 'Alabama Thunder Pussy' on Media Jukebox on OGG format

OGG ,sorry

No problem.

As yes, I misunderstood you. Sorry about that. In that case, you are correct.

Anyway, by mentioning built-in OGG support in Winamp and Coolplayer, I hope I made it clear to BigMike that SOFTWARE player support is increasing, because of the format's rising popularity.
