In Media Library but not subfolders??
« on: July 19, 2002, 09:46:08 am »

I have recently set Media Jukebox up on my computer and imported my entire MP3 collection. All of the files already had ID3 tags, and everything seemed to work well - if I click on MEdia Library I see a list of all my songs, with the title, author, and everything else correct.

The problem lies in the scheme views beneath Media Library in the tree. It seems as if all of my files are not considered under the headings like artist or genre. There are only one or two entries containing something like "various artists".

Any help would be monumentally appreciated. Thanks.

What version of MJ are you using?  If not 8.0, please try it.

Your artists and albums should show up if you click on the |PLS| symbols to expand the tree.  If not, your tags may be wrong.

Bob W - what version of MJ are you using?

Also, just let me clarify - under Media Library you see all the songs listed with the correct artist in the artist column but if you click on the tree entries you don't see tree entries for each artist?

I'm using 8.0.320, per the Help about screen. The files all appear ok and the info is in the proper fields when I right click and do properties, so I think the tagging is ok... any thoughts?

Actually, to clarify, the way the files were tagged was that my brother brought the collection into MJ on his box, tagged everything (took a while :)), and then when I decided to convert to MJ I didn't want to have to re-tag, so I erased my files and copied from him. Then I ran the import and am having this problem.

Hope that helps,
Bob

So, you have a bunch of artists listed in the artist column. If you click on the |PLS| next the Media Library what do you see listed? Assuming that you see "|PLS| Artist" in the tree, click on that what do you see?

I see nothing - as if there were no songs imported with an artist. See the attached screenshot - note that there are no pluses next to the schemes (there WERE plusses, and when I click to expand they disapear because there's nothing there). If I click on the node in the tree to bring up the list on the right I simply get a blank list.

Bob W - I don't know. A J River person needs to look at this.

2 suggestions...

1) Did you try clearing the library and importing again?

2) Click on File / Update library and then select Update All Database fields and see what happens.

Thanks very much for the help - hopefully somebody there will be able to assist - I did try re-importing; I also tried turning on the option of automatically importing on opening a file, and doing things that way. No go.

I thought you had it with updating the database, but alas, it goes through the whole thing and I am left with the same results.

:(

Bob W - I had a brain wave. Where the tree says "Artist/Album" right click and select Edit / View Scheme.

Mine says...

Album Artist
Album

in the main window. I'm assuming yours does too. If so click on "Album Artist" and click Delete then Add and choose "Artist" from the drop box. Then OK and see if that fixes it.

weird! I did so and it added TWO entries. They seem to have nothing in common; just two random songs were added (actually their artists...). I've got no clue for this one!...

Me either. I suggest that you go back into the properties of the view scheme and put it back to "album artist".

Have you checked the tags in the files with another tool?

Some questions:
Where are the files?  Local, lan...

Can you try
-Clear the library
-copying a few files to another local location and try again
-Generaly mucking with a small subset of your files until it's sused it out, then import the whole bunch)

Looking at the files with Dr. Tag, Helium.  Look at some tags that work, and some that don't, what is the diff?

Are there funny characters (leading spaces)?

If you edit a tag and save it, does that fix things for that file?

Please post sysinfo (help>System Info)

Have you tried File> Library> Update Library and then check Remove Files That Don't Exist AND Update Database Files?

I haven't. I figured that since the entire library is OK on my brother's machine (see above posting about getting to where I am now) that it would be ok on mine...

Make a backup of your library, then erase browser "browser.jmd"

It may have gotten corrupted...

Let us know.

hooray! Many thanks. It appears that it has worked; all artists now appear, etc. I will let you know if my assesment somehow turns out to be wrong, but it seems to have worked.

Thanks very much to all.

To Matt (Gatobrit and all other interact "helpers"),

This thread is very impressive.  In less than two hours a user gets the answer to a tough little problem.  JRiver once again shows how forum tech support can really work.  Kudos all around.
