Video from digital camera - no duration and MP4 playback
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:56:50 am »

I have several videos taken from digital cameras.  With the older camera (.AVI, MJPEG) and the newer one (.MP4) Media Center lists no duration for all the imported videos.  Is there some trick to get it to compute the duration?

Also, I am having jerky playback with the .MP4 files.  These play smoothly in Quicktime.  Is there a way to select the same "filters" that Quicktime is using for playback in MC (I have looked at the filters and none of them are obvious to me)?

Turns out MC is using the "Quicktime engine" for playback of the MP4 files but it is still not smooth playback in MC like it is when I play it in Quicktime (the CPU usage in both programs seems to be the same).

Any ideas why and also why I'm not getting any Duration for my videos?

No duration usually means there was some failure during analysis of the video.  You can try "Update Library (from tags)" which forces MC to analyze again.  If you are not getting smooth playback using Quicktime engine, you should try using DirectShow.

Thanks.  I was able to get the durations with Update Library but the "Dimensions" is still not calculated for my .MP4 files (should be 1280x720)?  Also, can you give me some suggestions on what filters to use for .MP4 playback?  I have a "MPEG4 Decoder DMO" but playback fails using this and I really have no idea what is required for .MP4 playback.

Here's what I'm successfully using for MP4 video playback:
Playback Method: JRiver Video Engine
Source Filter: Haali Media Splitter
Other Filter: Bitrate Monitor
Renderer: Auto

Works like a champ. I have a vague recollection of needing to turn off the bitrate monitor previously, so try that if this setup doesn't work for you immediately.

Haali media splitter and FFDShow Video decoder are the two filters that are usually needed for mp4 files.  These filters are found as part of CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack.  Once you have these filters, the setting suggested above will work.

Thanks to you both.  I have it playing smoothly inside MC now although it makes me a little nervous installing decoders from a "questionable" source :-\.

CCCP has been solid for us.
