wiki help pages out of date
« on: March 03, 2009, 07:03:19 pm »

I think the wiki is a great idea. But it needs work to be useful.  The point I will be making here is that

1. Some of the information from the User Manual link is not from the v12 help file, but from before that (so not only is it not up to date with v13, but it isn't even up to date with v12).

2. It is very confusing to use.

Here is an example.

I wanted to know if auto-import automatically imported files, or if it could be used as a placeholder for some folders I like to import from, but only actually do the importing on my command via the "Auto Import Now".

So I selected Help, but instead of getting the help file which I know included a blurb about auto import (although it is out of date), I was sent to the Wiki (I pressed Help > Contents).

In the search box I typed "auto import". I got a special page that said there is no page for auto import.
I figured out that I had to select User Manual in the left menu.  Did that.

I read the top part that says more current info is in the FAQ. So I went there. That just gave me a page that said I had to login to edit a page. Back to the User Manual link.

It took a while, but I figured out that I had to scroll down to get to "Contents". I couldn't really see any option that related to Import, but on a guess I picked Media Files. On another guess, I picked Audio Files. There was nothing about Import.  I hit Libraries, and got to Import.

But as I said above, that information is pre-version 12.

I've often stayed away from the wiki because I have found it extremely confusing.  I'm sure it just needs a bit of organizing, because I assume the information is in there somewhere.

I find myself in a position of having to 'teach' some new users and potentials about the finer points of MC13 whereas in my own case I've been able to muddle through the basics up until now.  Now I'm attempting to answer questions that I'm unable to find the answers for.     This forum is great for the occasional hint, solution, etc.

There are many changes in MC13 over 12 and before it seems to me so I wonder if the 'fuzz' would be in a position to point to the 'user manual' for MC13 or assemble one highlighting how to make best use of the new features?

Or is that what the forum is for?   To ask and seek answers and make notes and compile one's own 'manual' ?         Many thanks for the best MC around.

And on that note... This is something I've been meaning to suggest for quite a while now. Is it possible to filter searches so that the release threads are not included? I rely mostly on the forum now for info on features, but sometimes the results are pages and pages of "Version xxx is available here" threads with the entire history being displayed, and then repeated multiple times. It takes a really long time to scroll past those to get to actual user questions/answers.

I don't know if it would work here, but another SMF 1.1.8 board I frequent solved this and similar problems by installing the SMF Search Enhancement Mod. It is recommended by a SMF "Support Specialist" here. It improves the quality of searches dramatically, and provides many useful additional features.
