ASIO or WASAPI problem
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:20:54 pm »

I have new Benchmark USB DAC1 running with Windows7.
But, WASAPI or ASIO complained "ASIO/WASAPI does not support 24/96000 (or 16/41000)"
all the time.
I'd like to use "Bit Perfect" stream to my USB DAC.
Sometime, I could hear music on PC speaker and ASIO control menu shows both PC sound card and USB audio both are active. I'm confusing about MC's Playback Audio options.

But, it works fine with another Media Player such as "XMPlay" under Win7 or "ITune" under MAC.
I tried "OUTPUT format" with any possible combination at OPTIONS.
Any idea ? I hope I get an some answer this time.
thanks in advance.

Interesting.  We spent some time on something similar today.

What make and model USB DAC are you using?

Yes. that's the one, 24/192K DAC.
By the way, it works fine "WAVE OUT" or "DIRECT SOUND" Playback options.
Is "WAVE OUT" Bit perfect ?
thanks.

Try 14.0.15, just released last night.  WASAPI, 24Bit.

Yes. it worked for 24/96K recorded music with 14.0.15 WASAPI, but failed to play 16/44K this time.
By the way, 24/96K playback worked only when I uncheck WASAPI option "Present 24-bit data in a 32-bit package" rather than check.
also, MC14 didn't copy over all menu and skin setting from MC13.

thanks.

You will need to select 24-bit in DSP Studio.  These high end DACs only like 24-bit data.  As you found, they also don't like the option "Present 24-bit data in a 32-bit package" which is checked by default.

So, for the best quality playback with these high-end DACs, use these settings (this requires Media Center 14.0.15 or later):

Options > Playback > Audio
Use WASAPI Output

Inside "Output mode settings..." for WASAPI
Checked: Open device for exclusive access
Unchecked: Present 24-bit data in a 32-bit package

DSP Studio > Output Format
Bitdepth: 24-bit
Channels: Source number of channels
Sample rate: Depends (with a great outboard DAC, I'd lean towards "Source sample rate")

Matt,
Yes, it works both recording with 24 or 16 bits via WASAPI now with DSP setting to 24bit mode !
Windows volume control has no effect on WASAPI as I expected also.
Now, I have to re-do my other menu setting at MC14 as like as MC13.
Great job folks !
thanks.
