MC13.exe Run as a Service
« on: March 21, 2009, 10:45:07 am »

I'm trying to get MC13.exe to run as a service on my HP MediaSmart Server (WHS).

I have set up a batch file with the following commands to run as a service:
Quote
C:\WINDOWS\system32\MC13.exe /MediaServer
MC13.exe /MCC 20028, 1

This should run MC in media server mode, and then reload the library immediately in Read only mode. It works and MC13 is visibily running in the list of services. However, even though I have "Allow service to interact with desktop" ticked, I cant see MC when I remote desktop in to the server. If I try to load it from the shortcut, it tells me that:

"Media Center is already running, but could not be activated. This means that the program is already running inder a different user account, or that it is not responding. To solve this problem, reboot the computer and ensure that no additional user accounts are runnign th program."

I dont know what to do. Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

When you Remote Desktop to the machine, are you using the /console switch? (Start -> Run -> mstsc /console) That will connect you to the same "instance" as if you sat down to the actual keyboard and monitor on that machine.

Actually, I'm not even sure that would work... Services generally run under the System account, if I'm not mistaken.

It's worth a try, though, if you haven't tried it already.

Tried that too. Didnt make any difference.

Actually I dont even mind not having access to the gui for the most part, except that I couldnt connect to my library using library server from work today. So I had to stop the service, and run MC on the WHS as just a normal program, and then it started working again.

I'm using a piece of software that I downloaded for WHS called "Run any program as service", it uses the windows server 2003 resource kit to register a program as a service.
