Albums appear under artists
« on: June 04, 2009, 08:31:47 am »

Hi

I have been using MC13 for a few weeks now, upgrading from 12 (prev 11 & 10). Last night I noticed that under 'Artists' some of the entries were infact the names of 'Albums'. For example, under 'Artists' is 'Timeless' (the name of the album) rather than 'Goldie' the artist. I have checked the tags and everything in teh tags is in the right place so can't work out how to resolve the problem.  Having had a quick scan through, this is not the only example, but as I have 3969 artists listed, it is not an easy job to understand teh scale of the problem.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Select a few files and right click to do Library Tools/Update Library (from Tags).

A possible explanation:

If the file format is MP3 and the TPE2 (aka band/orchestra/accompaniment) ID3v2 file tag incorrectly contains the album name it will be imported to the "Album Artist" library field.

The former "band" field in MP3 files is now read as "Album Artist" (this was changed because WMP, iTunes and many other programs use this system).

If the "Album Artist" field has a value the other, automatic, "Album Artist (auto)" field shows this value. In the default view schemes "Album Artist (auto)" is used instead of "Artist" because that makes possible to group the individual tracks of various artists albums together as albums.

Hello

thanks for your replies - Jim - your suggestion made no difference I'm afraid.

Alex - I have checked the tags via Media Centre and all seemed fine. However when I checked 'All tags' i saw an additional field called 'Album Artist'. In the mis-filed albums the album name is repeated in the 'album artist' field, but the artist was correct in the 'artist' field. It seems that MC priorotises the 'Album Artist' field over the 'Artist' field. I can change these when I find them, but mystified why it happened in the first place. I have even found instances where half the album is correctly listed under the artist and the othe half in correctly as the album name. Is there a way to force MC to prioritise the Artist field?

Thanks for your help

OK, I have been looking at this in more detail and there are 100's of misfiled albums. Considering that I have a library with 3500 artists, this is going to be a massive job to resolve. Also consider that I used MC to rip every album from CDs I own, there must be something in MC13 that caused this to occur when I upgraded from MC12.

Some help from JRiver would be much apreciated

Thanks

So apparently the problem is caused by the TPE2 file tag. MC13 reads it as Album Artist. I don't know why it was filled in the first place if you didn't do it, but you can select all files and simply remove the Album Artist field values all at once. MC will then revert to the default behavior.
