Remote Possibilities
« on: June 19, 2009, 06:17:04 pm »

If you follow our work closely at all, and you must have a miserable lonely life if you do, you'll have noticed a lot of work in the area of remote control.

Support for MS MC remotes

MC as the remote (aka Tremote, as in neTbookRemote or TouchscreenRemote)

Now IR blasting (aka Remote Relay).

I understand that some of you think we're spinning our wheels sometimes.  But this is our long term goal:

We hope to add a hardware element soon.

You may appreciate this in a few months, when you have a beer in one hand, and your other arm around your loved one.

FWIW... I'm in your camp on this one.

Definitely.

I don't see any hands free here so at risk of misunderstanding is it ok to assume it will be the loved one doing the fiddling, er clicking?

ie MC is now WAG friendly.

Any hints at what this might be?  I am currently attempting to build a Windows Sideshow gadget for MC to use on a Philips Pronto TSU9200 remote which would be the perfect remote control in my opinion but I will scrap this if you guys are coming up with something better.

Probably something like this:

A.  On the low end (under $100) something like the description on our wiki of Remote Relay.
A good MS MC remote
IR Receiver with jacks for Emitters
Emitters

Maybe a wireless relay option like this (Philips RFX2001):

OR
B.  Later, a touch screen solution (under $500).  Right now, the best candidate is the Asus Eee PC T91 Touch Screen

Eventually, similar devices should be available for a lot less -- maybe $200.  This would run a copy of MC on the touch screen PC, as described here.

What we're aiming at with the first category of hardware is a single product that works well and has good instructions.  Some of you have already put together something similar.  Maybe you'll agree that it takes some patience, and often it isn't quite right.

We've tested a lot of the MS MC remotes and they are all a little different.  Some work better than others.

We won't offer one unless we think it's bullet proof and simple to install.
