Time ShiftProblem
« on: June 20, 2009, 03:20:31 am »

I have a Schuttle PC (SP25)  (2400 dual core Opteron 64) running vista 32 bussiness (only version i have) that i want to use as a media center. Since the computer is small, i must use an USB analog TV card and i have tried Hauppage HVR900 (really bad) and now a Cinergy HTC USB card. Both card work with their own programs (including time shift) , but the programs are really crappy und unstable.

The JR media center is by far the best from touch and feel i have come across (not having tried the one from the evil empire). Everything works, except timeshift: Wehn I activate it, the acpect ration of the video changes and on replay i get funny colors (all red/green) while the audio is OK. If I stop the timeshift but keep the recording, i can watch it.

I tried the various encoding options but nothing really changes. Any clues ? The frame rate is quite low when timeshift is running (400) Could it be that onbord graphics card is too weak (3s chrome) ?

If it works in normal viewing, then the graphics card is good enough.

What happens if you try to record a program?  Does that work?

I use USB TV sticks on several machines.  They work well.

You said frame rate of 400.  What do you mean by that?

MC has logging under Help.  Try turning it on and reading the logs.  It might provide a clue.

Thanks, recording works too. I can even watch the time-shift recordings if i stop and keep them afterwards and they come out right. With frame-rate I mean the number in the blend-in menu on top of the screen in thime-shift mode.

I will try to log stuff.

I will try to log stuff.

Before resorting to sending logs, please first try posting the following two pieces of info:

1. While you are doing time-shifting, right-click and find DirectShow Filters > Copy graph info to clipboard, and post it here.

2. On TV view, Configure... > Settings... click Copy television related filter info to clipboard, and post it here.

Thanks.

Thanks.

Your aspect ratio problem most likely was caused by the selection of "Recording Profile".  If you select a Recording Profile that specifies 640 x 240 video, you would get just that when used in combination of Aspect Ratio setting of "Source Aspect Ratio".

To view the video in correct aspect ratio, you have two options - choose a different profile that specifies 640 x 480 (or 320 x 240), or set Aspect Ratio setting to "4 x 3".

You can also experiment with creating your own Recording Profile.  The wizard will take you through several steps in which you can specify video size (such as 640 x 480, 720 x 480 etc.) and a video compressor - depending on what is available on your system.  You may also choose an audio compressor.

I can not see your screenshots, but I understand what you try to tell us.

I am not sure whether the problem is due to your video card or due to JRiver video encoder.  Creating a new Recording Profile using a different video encoder might just solve the problem for you.  A different DirectShow filter combination sometimes can produce very different result.
