New OGG encoder
« on: July 12, 2002, 10:35:52 am »

The next build of MJ 8.0 [build 327 -- now on Interact] will have a brand new OGG encoder.

The new version uses oggenc.exe instead of static library ( so you can update it to any version of encoder you want ). It is as fast as the Lame MP3 encoder.

Ogg encoder does not support CBR mode so it's gone only VBR encoding is available, and as far as I can see the quality even in normal mode is just fantastic.

What Sounds Better When Trying To Play On A Car Mp3 Player, Or Personal Mp3 Player Since Ogg Is not supported?

CD -> MP3

Or

CD -> Ogg -> Mp3

Here are the test results, we tested the same music encoded in WAV and OGG:

The best quality OGG (-q 10):
Matt - 100% found ogg file.
Raymond - 100% found ogg file.
Nikolay - can't hear difference.
Johnt - can't hear difference.
Steve - 100% found ogg file.

Yes, we tested the original against the best lossy compressions. (LAME at 320 and OGG at -q10)  Even at those high bitrates, most of us could quickly pick out the lossy version, using only $10 headphones.

And people told me I'm crazy for using lossless compression

Thank you for your quick response. Also, using oggenc.exe and providing an option for a custom quality level are great additions.

Much appreciated !
