JRservice.exe
« on: July 04, 2009, 10:43:48 am »

What is it?
What does it do?
Why is it running in the background?
And how come when I force it closed I see no change in MC's behavior?

Can't find it with a search here or in Google.
Just curious.

Was added in MC 14.0.21:
Quote
4. NEW: Player installs "Media Center 14 Service" that runs only when the player is running to allow talking to hardware (for remotes, handhelds, etc.) when UAC is enabled.

I saw that but passed it by without paying attention since UAC pertains to Vista and I use only XP.

thanks for the reply

Not really, because there are people (hopefully many of them) running WinXP with limited profiles, or at least internet-facing applications with limited rights. After all, doing so is one of the best defenses you have against malware :)

It will be used on all flavors of Windows.  It only runs when Media Center is running, and consumes no cycles when not used.

Personally I don't like that Microsoft forces us down this road, but it's the only way to communicate with hardware in Vista and now Windows 7.

I think there may be an issue with the service at Windows shutdown time if Media Center is running.  This will get fixed in a coming build.

Hm, limited profiles have nothing / not much in common with UAC I think...

Sure it does, UAC is pretty much just a way of making a limited/restricted user profile more usable by prompting for elevated rights when required (yes, there are more to it than this but still...).

Questions:
- is JRService.exe required?
- what is JRTools
- in what way are they related to WMHelper.dll
