Trying to Connect from my MJ|PLS| 8.0.320 on XP to a Media Server that says it is ready to share, the client tries to install some package and fails. The dialog boxes fly by too fast for me to read what it's trying to install and all I see is the last dialog box that claims to have failed to unzip some temporary file.

I don't suspect any network problems because the Web Remote controls the server's MJ just fine.

What is it trying to install when I Connect?

Hello Adrian.

I have exactly the same problem. Only on my XP machine, it's running fine on W2K boxes. It's not networking related. Please see also the thread "Cannot download library using Server", started by Endymion and continued by myself.

I've had the same problem and what I've done to solve it is to clear the temporary internet files cache [in IE/Tools/Internet Options].  That has always worked for me

phatrabt's suggestion is a good one.  We think that it is an IE bug.

Unfortnuately clearing of the IE cache does not solve the problem. It's seen on XP machines only so far. Any other suggestion?

This must be a problem on your machine.  We tested it here in two places without problems.

I suppose it could be something to do with user permissions.

I changed the version of MJ on the Win2K server to match the XP client. Still fails.

I am not an IE user so I can't see where the cache fits in.

The client seems to fail at unzipping a package. If there's a permissions issue it is probably not network related because some kind of download seems to happen successfully.

My question is:

Is there some kind of log that describes what the client is trying to do when I click "Connect to last"? If anyone knows how to enable that log, then the error should be pretty easy to see because I can see two alert dialogs flash on the screen each time before the final failure dialog.

There is no logging.

What about user permissions?

I have Administrator privilege on my XP laptop and have never had any installation issues.

My only guess now is that some Windows file is write only or can't be over-written for some reason.  It might help if you can see what the messages are.  

The package it is trying to install is probably the database of tracks from the server on the other PC.

Hmmm....could also be a security setting that is set too high and won't allow an unzip to be run automatically.

I'm almost completely certain that it is an OS problem, not an MJ problem.

You could be right. I have StuffIt installed and XP has its own native unzip capability so it would not be surprising if MJ is having issues with some XP configurations.

If you suggest a work-around we might be able to at least confirm the hypothesis.

After you try to connect, in this directory,

C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox

you should see a file called:

MJ Server Library.zip.

Do you see it?  Does the time stamp look right?

What happens if you try to execute it?

It works now.

I think the problem has to do with running both the Media Server and Web Remote on the same MJ server. By some accident of installation, Media Server had installed itself on Port 80 which was being used by Web Remote. Web Remote won. After a restart of the Server MJ gave an error message and HUNG on startup. After killing the process in Windows Task Manager, MJ restarted an the Media Server attached itself to Port 81.

Now I'm able to connect to it from my client by specifying the IP address and Port number. Web Remote still works and all appears well.

MJ rocks but there are still a few rough edges with the bleeding edge features, I guess.
