Renaming / Tagging Isssue (XXXX,YYYY files)
« on: August 28, 2009, 06:33:47 pm »

Hello everybody.

I have the following setup :
  • NAS containing all music
  • multiple Win XP SP 2 P.Cs accessing the music on the NAS
  • seperate Jukebox libs on the different P.Cs
Since we started using MJ there has been a gradual and annoying build up of media files ending with .XXXX and .YYYY. These have replaced many of our music files and are starting to clog up the NAS.
An example would be "Michael Jackson - Beat it.mp3" being replaced by
"Michael Jackson - Beat it.mp3.XXXX" and "Michael Jackson - Beat it.mp3.YYYY". :-\

Is there anyway - besides renaming and deleting the unwanted files - to prevent this from happening ?
I understand the XXXX and YYYY files are backups but MJ doesn't recognize them as such, thus diminishing the recognizable library AND clogging up the NAS. There must be another way around this. Say...some program setting I did not see ?

This is a known limitation with the MP3 tagging engine in Media Jukebox when dealing with certain NAS drives.  I think it's when they don't handle long filenames nicely, but I'm not certain.

This limitation no longer exists with Media Center 14 (and maybe the latest Media Center 13).  They feature a rewritten MP3 tagging engine with a lot of improvements.

So basically my only other option is to buy MC 14 ~$50 ? I think I'd be better off writing a little script to solve the problem.

Ty for you response Matt.

That may be but I use Media Jukebox 12, which is free. I'm not so keen on spending money on software. Kinda the opensource and freeware proponent ;-)
