library server help
« on: September 10, 2009, 09:57:33 am »

hello all,

I am running the latest version of media center but am having problems with the library server.  When I am on my home network, everything is fine (I can load the library on different computers), however, when I am on a different network (for example, at a coffee shop), it won't load the server.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

If it works at home but not away from home, it's a routing problem or a firewall problem.

On our wiki, I think there is a section on this.  Linksys has a good tutorial for routing on their site.

The short answer for routing is that you need to set up NAT (Network Address Translation) so that any packet inbound on the socket/port you use is routed to the correct internal address.  I would not recommend using port 80 for this.  Something higher, like 8081, would be better since port 80 often runs a web server and is therfore the target of outside malicious software probing for weaknesses on your network.
