Auto Power Off for Receivers
« on: September 21, 2009, 06:49:16 pm »

I've been gradually trying to reduce my power consumption at home.  I made a discovery yesterday that I didn't expect.  I have mostly Sony equipment, partly because I try to stay with a single manufacturer to minimize problems.

I found that my receiver (around 2 years old) has a setting for "Power Save".  I set it to "On" and hoped for the best.

It turned itself off after an hour or so of no playback.

I have a newer Sony TV in another room that does this, and when it does, it takes the receiver down.  HDMI can do this if you tell it to.

yup, the HDMI power feature controls are a stealth way into setting your connected devices into a reduced power state.  I think you need HDMI 1.2 (components and cables, there is an extra pin that early build and/or cheap cables might not implement) but maybe not.

I've seen HDMI switches that could be configured to set unused and idle ports into the standby state.
