Fields by genre type?
« on: October 18, 2009, 07:06:54 pm »

Is it possible to set up a JRiver expression that shows a certain field only for a given genre? For example, when viewing "Classical" genre, it shows [Conductor] field in the panes, but when you switch to "Rock" genre, the [Conductor] field goes away. Another great feature would be to show all fields that are not null for a given selection of genre, album, artist, etc.

This would be awesome for those of us with a very diverse music collection, since not all fields are relevant to all genres.

This is a good question.
For example conductor in Classics genre, producer and label in Electronics, composer in some genres and so on...

The normal way of dealing with this is to use to define different views for different media types. You could have one view for classical and another for rock—to give you exactly the behaviour you describe when switching from one to the other. And you can still use one view for all music—for situations where having all music in one view is necessary.
